Fairfax was driven from York to Selby, then to Leeds in 1643 where he was totally defeated at Adwalton Moor.
Fairfax recaptured Selby in April 1644 and joined the Earl of Manchester and the Army of the Covenant at the siege of York.
He was one of the Allied commanders at Marston Moor but fled the field after his infantry were routed, believing the battle to be lost.

The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of York, value £160, in the patronage of Viscount Downe, who built the church, and who resides at Cowick Hall, which is a handsome and commodious mansion.
It is situated on the Goole canal, and gives title of baron and viscount to the Earl of Mexborough, of Methley, who is lord of the manor.
