  Henry Wilmot, 1st Earl of Rochester - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wilmot's family was descended from Edward Wilmot of Witney, Oxfordshire, whose son Charles Wilmot, 1st Viscount Wilmot of Athlone, (1570/71–1644) had served with distinction in Ireland during Tyrone's Rebellion at the beginning of the 17th century, and was president of Connaught from 1616 until his death.
In 1656, Wilmot obtained command of a foot regiment of English in the royalist army in Bruges, thus becoming the first colonel of the Grenadier Guards.
Wilmot died at Sluys on February 19 and was buried at Bruges.

In December 1642, Wilmot and Lord Digby led a troop of dragoons in a daring attack on the town of Marlborough in Wiltshire.
Wilmot found favour with the Prince of Wales and was appointed a gentlemen of the bedchamber when the Prince succeeded as Charles II in 1649.
Wilmot became one of Charles' closest friends during his exile, and received the first peerage granted in Charles II's reign when he was created Earl of Rochester in December 1652.

Wilmot's work on bills was similar to that of the American agents and carried the same rewards, with the Irish parliament at the end of each session agreeing to pay him 200, with the same amount to William Sharpe, the secretary to the Privy Council, and 800 to be spread among under-secretaries, clerks and doorkeepers.
