Douglases and Drumlanrig continued - Drumlanrig Castle and The Douglas Family
A Charter dated 1356 reveals that the Barony of Drumlanrig was originally a property of the Earl of Mar. In or before 1388, when James, 2nd Earl of Douglas and Mar, died at the Battle of Otterburn, it passed to his son William Douglas, who became 1st Laird of Drumlanrig.
William was made Viscount of Drumlanrig, Lord Douglas of Hawick and Tiberis in 1628, and in June 1633 Earl of Queensberry.
Drumlanrig's builder, William, the 1st Duke of Queensberry, might well have felt happier about his investment had he been able to visualise the striking contribution the Castle now makes to the cultural life of the country.

The book adds that the relationship between Rosebery and Drumlanrig led to the Viscount being made the PM’s private secretary, and eventually a Lord.
However, the Viscount’s father was continually suspicious, and openly called the PM “a Jew nancy boy”, the book alleges.

According to McKenna, the Liberal Prime Minister, the Earl of Rosebery, was having an affair with Viscount Drumlanrig, eldest son of the Marquess of Queensberry and elder brother of Lord Alfred Douglas, the lover of Oscar Wilde.
The theory that Rosebery may have been sexually involved with Drumlanrig is not a new one - several writers on the Wilde trials have commented on the possibility.
The first is that Drumlanrig died in what was said to be a shooting accident (but which was probably suicide) in 1894.

Historical perspective for Drumlanrig Castle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The barony of Drumlanrig belonged to the Douglases as early at least as 1356, and for four centuries passed from father to son with only a single break (1578), and then from grandsire to grandson.
In 1388 James, second Earl of Douglas, conferred it on the elder of his two natural sons, Sir William de Douglas, first Baron of Drumlanrig, whose namesake and ninth descendant was created Viscount of Drumlanrig in 1628 and Earl of Queensberry in 1633.

Bosie’s beloved older brother, Francis, Viscount Drumlanrig, was also a Uranian.
Rosebery had arranged for his lover Drumlanrig to be given a peerage in 1893, so that he could sit in the House of Lords and assume a junior ministerial role.
But the Marquis of Queensberry—whose right to sit in the Lords had been lost (and thus, his political career thwarted) when, as a Scots Peer, he’d refused to swear the oath of allegiance to Queen Victoria—took the gift of a peerage to his older son as a deliberate insult.

Viscount Drumlanrig died after an hunting "accident" which, McKenna suggests, was a suicide intended to protect his famous lover.
The biography presents strong circumstantial evidence that Queensberry sent an ultimatum to the Liberal government: Send Oscar Wilde to prison or face the exposure of several senior Liberal politicians as sodomites.

Rosebery may well have known from Cecil Rhodes about the Jameson Raid that started the British move to annexe Dutch South Africa, but he was not exactly a conspirator.
More problematic is the issue of Rosebery's sexuality, not least because nowadays we take for granted the story that he was the lover of his secretary, Viscount Drumlanrig - a cute boy who died of a gunshot in the mouth that only a gymnast could have managed accidentally.
Drumlanrig being the brother of Lord Alfred Douglas, and son of the lunatic sodomite-hunting Marquis of Queensberry, that would put Rosebery on the fringes of the trials of Oscar Wilde.

DIRELAND: OSCAR WILDE'S SECOND COMING OUT
What's more, in 1892, not long after Bosie's love affair with Wilde had begun, Drumlanrig had become the lover of Lord Rosebery, the Liberal Party politician who had been Prime Minister Gladstone's foreign secretary before becoming prime minister himself in 1894.
This anger became uncontrollable rage when Drumlanrig committed suicide the year before Wilde's trials to save his lover Lord Rosebery from exposure.
It's well known that Wilde -- under pressure from his beloved -- decided to sue Bosie's father for libel for having called him a "sodomite." But what has never been so tellingly and completely detailed until this book is how Queensberry pressured Rosebery's Liberal government into subsequently prosecuting Wilde criminally--through flmail.

The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde, by Neil McKenna, is published next week and suggests that the prime minister, the Earl of Rosebery, had a gay relationship for over two years with Viscount Drumlanrig, the older brother of Wilde’s own lover, Lord Alfred Douglas.
The book says that the Marquess of Queensbury, the father of Drumlanrig and Douglas, was so furious that both his sons were gay that he threatened to reveal the PM’s own homosexuality.
The book also suggests that the relationship between Rosebery and Drumlanrig was instrumental to Drumlanrig being made the PM`s private secretary and eventually a Lord.
