Advaita Vedanta - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Advaita Vedanta (IAST ; Devanagari अद्वैत वेदान्त; IPA [ədvaitə vé:dα:ntə]) is probably the best known of all Vedanta schools of philosophy of Hinduism, the others being Dvaita and Vishishtadvaita (total six).
Advaita rejuvenated much of Hindu thought and also spurred on debate that led to the expounding of Vishishtadvaita (qualified nondualism) and Dvaita (dualism).
Advaita served to bring to the fore the Hindu/Vedic philosophy whose seed can be seen in the Rig Vedic statement "Truth is One, though the sages see it as many." Advaitism is definitely a very influential philosophy of India, secondary in global outreach only to Madhyamika of Buddhism.

His version of Indian Nondualism differed from Adi Shankara's because he acknowledged the existence of differences, and believed that the identity of an object as a part was as important as the unity of the whole.
Adi Sankara had argued that all qualities or manifestations that can be perceived are unreal and temporary.

The Vishishtadvaita Vedanta (‘Qualified non-dualism’) school of thought is based on the ideas of Ramanuja, a 12th Century Vaishnavite monk.
Ramanuja sought to remove Shankara’s concept of higher and lower levels of knowledge, respond to it, and respond to the concept of an illusory universe and explain the unity of the Jivatman and Paramatman.
As for Ramanuja, he is criticised for the way in which he dismisses the idea of the removal of ignorance, in order to realise the relationship between the ‘self’ and the ‘absolute’.

 Ramanuja [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
This is the doctrine known as "dharmabhutajnana" in the Vishishtadvaita tradition (Shrinivasadisa VII.2).
And while his significance in the history of Indian philosophy may be under appreciated, his greater influence on the character and form of popular Hinduism may also be under-recognized, despite the fact that he is regarded as a saint in many parts of Southern India.
According to Karl Potter, "…Ramanuja's tradition can be said to represent one of the main arteries through which philosophy reached down to the masses, and it may be that Vishishtadvaita is today the most powerful philosophy in India in terms of numbers of adherents, whether they know themselves by that label or not" (Potter p.253).

 HERE-NOW4U :Introduction to Sundararajan's "Self-Consciousness In Ramanuja's Vedanta"
Ramanuja, formerly being a follower of Shankara, adopted under the influence of the Alvars (prophet) and acaryas (master, teacher), the ideas of Vishnuism and finally became an ardent opponent of Shankara’s 'absolute monism' (kevaladvaita).
This concept is based on the conviction, that Vishnu is the only eternal god, and that the only means of salvation is through the loving devotion towards Vishnu, basing on an intimate relationship between god and individual soul.
R.K. Sundararajan, a professor of theology and profound knower of Indian philosophy and religion, analyzes in his article the different concepts of Vedanta, focusing on Ramanuja's vishishtadvaita and his understanding of 'self-consciousness'.

The system he produced is called "Vishishtadvaita," which literally means "qualified" (or "complex") non-dualism, as opposed to the Kevala Advaita ("Absolute Non-dualism") of his predecessor.
It is not surprising, then, with its devotional and theistic bent, that Ramanuja's Vishishtadvaita became the theoretical underpinning of the sectarian brand of Hinduism that came to (and still does) dominate popular piety in India in general, and particularly Vaishnavism (the god Vishnu's sect of followers).
The spiritual goal, however, is the same as in the Vishishtadvaita of Ramanuja: the enjoyment of God, especially in the avatara Krishna.
