Visible Human Project - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Visible Human Project is an effort to create a detailed data set of cross-sectional photographs of the human body, in order to facilitate anatomy visualization applications.
The project is run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) under the direction of Michael J. Ackerman.
Planning began in 1989; the dataset of the male was released in November 1994 and the one of the female in November 1995.

Known as the "Visible Human Project" the objective was to acquire transverse CT, MRI and cryosection images of a representative male and female cadaver at an average of one-millimeter intervals.
A contract for acquisition of the data was awarded in August 1991 to the University of Colorado at Denver.

Fathom :: The Source for Online Learning
The Visible Human data is so big and so extensive (15 gigabytes for the male and 50 gigabytes for the female) that many of us do not have the kind of memory that allows us to imagine how the body appears simultaneously in various planes of view.
For example, you could take datasets related to the human body that were not prepared as the Visible Human had been, but from other sources such as a high-resolution spiral CT image--a whole body scan, which you can have done in a doctor's office or a clinic.
One limitation of the Visible Human data is that it is not alive; it does not move, and it does not have blood or any dynamic physiology to speak of.

The Visible Human Project was sponsored by the National Library of Medicine of the National Institute of Health.
The Visible Male images were acquired first and derived from the body of a 39 year-old executed murderer.
In brief, the cadavers were perfusion fixed and frozen at -85 degrees C. At regular intervals (1.00 mm for the male and 0.33 for the female) body tissue was removed by a "cryosectioning" process conducted in the cross-sectional plane.

The Stanford Visible Female dataset, restricted to the female pelvis, is similar to the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project.
However, the SVF project is unique in two important ways: the specimen is that of a 32 year old female and it was fixed in a standing position.
However, the data set is limited to the pelvic region, the sections are thicker, and CT or MRI images of the specimen are unavailable.
