Vismon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vismon was the Bell Labs system which put author's faces on one of their internal email system.
Vismon was the work of Rob Pike and David L. Presotto.
The first programs built around Vismon were used to announce incoming mail in a dedicated window, using the 48 by 48 pixel faces.

Yes, VisMon Cluster is typically used to provide both high availability and disaster recovery solutions by physically splitting the location of the cluster server nodes.
VisMon provides XML helper utilities (C code executables for Unix/Linux) to guarantee well formed XML element tags and values i.e.
To configure a Cluster with VisMon Cluster you must have the underlying storage setup so it can be accessed by all nodes in the cluster.

VisMon provides a framework for graphical application monitoring, control, automatic error recovery, and high availability (HA) clustering across the Unix, Linux, and Windows 2K/XP/NT platforms.
VisMon can manage any number of nodes on a TCP/IP network from any location.
This is achieved by installing a single VisMon Agent on each server node, which can be controlled and monitored by one or more VisMon Explorer GUIs from the local LAN or Internet.

Interprocess Communication in 9th Edition Unix
The program, called vismon, mounts one end of a pipe on the user's terminal.
When some other process opens and writes on the special file for the terminal, the mounted stream receives the data; vismon creates a new window, and copies this data to it.
Communication between the terminal and the windowing multiplexor on the host is not disturbed; it continues to flow to the terminal itself, not to vismon, because the mount operation affects only the interpretation of file names, not existing file descriptors.

That is, a HOST/USER file would be assumed to be xbm instead of ikon, in contrast to HOST/USER/face.xbm.
I still want faces to work the way that the old V8 vismon did which is that new faces slid gently in from the side of the window and didn't just pop up suddenly.
Another suggestion about face_update: it would be nice if it did a "umask 022" at the very beginning, and if it were explicitly installed to run as "daemon, daemon" as setuid/setgid.
