THE MARS VOLTA Frances The Mute reviews
Vismund Cygnus isn't bad with some nice harmonies, trademark rapid-fire drumming and riffing and a decent chorus, but it was a little too similar to stuff on De-Loused for my liking.
Cygnus Vismund Cygnus is a great way to start the record, because it's a defining Mars Volta cut, exploring almost all the avenues that they play.
Vismund Cygnus is the best track on the album to me. Soft start, Hard hitting middle with i dont know what voice constortion, ending in a same mind moving way that only the Volta can do.

This album follows the story of Vismund Cygnus, trying desperatly to find and what happened to his parents, although there are various theorys on the net, this seems the most consistant.

There are several other characters -- L'Via, Miranda and Cassandra -- who may or may not simply exist in Cygnus' imagination, or may be, respectively, Frances' sister, her mother, and Cygnus' twin sister.
Deciphering the album is a dissatisfactory endeavor, made no easier by the knowledge that the band members want you to believe your own interpretation of the events described.

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
Not an album to be skipped through, Frances the Mute is a 76 minute prog-rock epiphany, touching all corners of the musical spectrum, leaving no boundary un-pushed.
The first movement of Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Sarcophagi creeps up on you quietly, before bursting into a heavily-textured tirade of Frank Zappa-style experimental musicianship, with Cedric Bixler Zavala's distinctive vocals masterfully riding the waves of crescendo-ridden, time-switching trickery supplied by Omar a Rodriguez-Lopez.
Cygnus covers the same ground as previous album De-Loused in the Comatorium, ranging from softly profound breakdowns, to unforgettable melodies at breakneck speed (Bixler's particular high point here is wailing "who do you trust") with the added presence of sections sung in Spanish.

The dozen tracks here represent but five "songs" proper, though the band's disdain for conventional track banding inspire it to sound more like a stream-of-consciousness soundscape from Can--or a dark, lyrically inventive, if decidedly troubled corner of their ids.
On the "Umbilical Syllables" portion of "Cygnus.." and "The Widow" Bixter-Zavala invokes the wailing, Zeppelin II & III spirit of Robert Plant set against a feverish, swirling melange that's anything but the blues.
Vismund Cygnus: Starts off with a sweet little quiet part and enters into a hard section with Spanish lyrics before turning to English.

The roar of Rodriguez Lopez and Bixler's post-hardcore past is fully locked away, replaced by an equally powerful flair for expressive percussion, intricate vocal harmonies, and extended solos for electric guitar (as on the initial part of "Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus").
With an inspiring willingness to innovate, the Afros that are Cedric and Omar have just broken the obstacles that they themselves laid in their path.

Though "Cygnus" was for those in the crowd who were diehard MV fans, everyone remained patient.
Unlike their debut tour, the band has added a couple of horn players and a percussionist, as well as former At the Drive-in bandmate Paul Hinojos as their "sound manipulator".
After getting through "Cygnus", the crowd was rewarded with the next two songs, each of which has gotten some radio airplay.

The album is reminiscent of Pink Floyd in several ways - particularly its sweeping, multi-part song structures, massive guitar solos and general feeling of enormity - but all of this is channeled through The Mars Volta's fast, punchy style.

Without sacrificing the creepy overtones and wild sound, the Mars Volta opts for a new, stranger sound that is a bit less rock and a bit more prog.
Continuing in the epic progressive nature of their previous release, "Deloused in the Comatorium", "Frances the Mute" sees the band pushing the boundaries even further, making for a somewhat jarring but undoubtedly engaging listen.
The song sort of builds up in reverse, firing out of the gate with wild jazzy time changes, eventually melting into spacious guitar melodies, and finally concluding with an odd electronic bit.
