Visokoi Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Visokoi Island (56°42′S 027°12′W) is one of the South Sandwich Islands, 7.2 km (4.5 mi) long and 4.8 km (3 mi) wide, capped by Mount Hodson, a volcanic peak (915 m).
It was discovered in 1819 by a Russian expedition under Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, who named the island Visokoi (high) because of its conspicuous height.
The peak is named after Sir Arnold Weinholt Hodson, a governor of the Falkland Islands.

The South Sandwich Islands consist of 11 islands (from north to south): Zavodovski, Leskov (the smallest), Visokoi, Candlemas, Vindication, Saunders, Montagu (the largest), Bristol, Bellingshausen, Cook and Thule.
The South Sandwich Islands are 760km south east of South Georgia, and cover 310 sq m.
Even though these islands are more northerly than the South Shetlands (or even the South Orkneys), they have a much colder climate (due to the cold ocean current coming from the Weddell Sea).

The South Sandwich islands are tall enough to disrupt the cloud patterns forming and flowing around them.
However, appearances can be deceiving, as the wake patterns extending due eastward from each of the islands suggest that the air mass is moving to the east.
For example, the peak on Zavodovski, the northernmost of the islands, stands at 1,807 feet (551 m), while the peak on Visokoi, the island just south of it, is 3,295 feet (1,005 m) tall.

 Antarctic Cruise
Antarctic islands are the islands in the Southern Ocean or in the seas around Antarctica inside of Antarctic Circle.
In fact, these islands, as well as all territories and ice shelves south of the 60 S parallel, fall into the Antarctic Treaty, which freezes all territorial claims made by the signatory countries.
So, even though these islands are claimed by Argentina, Chile and the UK, it is not correct to identify them as belonging to the UK or any other country.

In the Southern Atlantic, located about 525 miles (845 km) east of South Georgia Island, a chain of eleven volcanic islands rises up from the ocean in an arc that extends roughly 240 miles (400 km) north to south.
Known as the South Sandwich Islands, these volcanic peaks stand on the Earth’s South Sandwich Plate, which is moving eastward at the stately pace of 2.75 inches (7 cm) per year.
The islands’ peaks range in elevation between 1,807 feet (551 m) and 3,600 feet (1,100 m), and stand in about 8,500 feet (2,600 m) of water.

The largely ice-covered, 6 x 8 km Visokoi Island consists of a single stratovolcano, Mount Hodson, whose rounded 1005-m-high summit lies west of the center of the island.
Numerous basaltic scoria cones were constructed on the lower flanks of the oval-shaped island, which is part of the Traverse Islands in the northern part of the South Sandwich Island chain.
The youthful morphology of Visokoi Island suggests that volcanic activity has continued until virtually the present time (LeMasurier and Thomson, 1990).
