Visual comedy remained strong throughout the 1930s, but now witty dialogue and verbal comedy were added.
C. Fields is known for his recognizable raspy voice, pool cue, oversized bulbous nose and nasal drawl, stove-pipe hat, flask of 100-proof whiskey and love of drink, caustic verbal wit and wisecracks, and irritable disdain for small children, animals, upper-class snobs and bullying wives.
He was an inspired comedian, a master of visual gags, double-takes, casual asides and pantomime.

 5. Physical comedy and the visual gag
Gag seven is Bill walking back to the office, but stopping to provide a speedy but highly professional statement of management’s position to the striking Joe.
The final variation of the gag occurs when Dave, after Lisa continues to refuse to accept what may be perceived as special treatment, decides to put the chair "out of its misery" with a katana (a prop from one of the other two plot lines of this episode).
What this gag demonstrates is the perfect marriage of visual and verbal comedy that typifies NewsRadio: fast-paced, brilliantly constructed with the variations and imaginative surprises that mark the very best of gags, visually economical, efficient, and elegant, with smooth transitions from one gag to the next.

Keaton could create gags from sequences of shots, as in his amazing trajectory gags, where he is propelled through space, a plaything of momentum, gravity, and the objects in his path.
Gag after gag in the history of comedy depends on exploiting, rather than concealing the apparent limitations of the film frame.
This is an extension of the flatness gag – using the limits of the screen for unrealistic pleasure.

Wacky Comedy film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jokes and visual gags fly fast and furious, usually in a non sequitur manner that eschews narrative for sheer absurdity.
Though they may be hit-and-miss, the ultimate success or failure of this type of comedy depends on the overall percentage of jokes that amply tickle a viewer's funny bone.
The gags are often similar to slapstick, but with less emphasis on physical violence and more emphasis on comic antics.

 son gags when toileting
You are undoubtedly correct in thinking that your son's gagging is a psychologically-based response.
You are wise to basically ignore the gagging response - there's no need to focus on it.
Since the visual stimulus is what appears to bring on the gagging, he could sit while urinating and you could help him learn to avert his glance and close the lid to the toilet before flushing.

The gags are imaginitive, and most of them are physically impossible, but they don't add up to the madcap vision of physical reality found in the MGM cartoon, they just flaunt their weirdness.
I initially underrated A Wild Hare because I expected outlandish visual gags from Tex Avery, and while that was a mistake, it’s forgivable since his visual gags come close to the MGM stuff.
The gags don't develop the characters as intricately as A Wild Hare or Hecklin' Hare, preferring to be eccentric (I have no use for the bullets that follow Bugs, for instance), which is why I don't enjoy it as much.

 Getting the joke
Gag follows gag in an orgasmic rush - all delivered by consummate professional comedians, (who like many others had adapted their stage routine for the cinema.) In the later Marx Bros. films, the 'story' takes over (often a fairly feeble romance) and the gags are demoted to a sideshow.
In most comedy films there is a tension between the gag and the narrative situation and between the comedian and the comic actor.
As well as the tension between the gag and the narrative, there is a further set of categorisations which refer to the purposes of comedy and, linked to this, the status of the comedy form.

 Asian American Film: Reviews
With little care for continuity or consistent eyelines but enormous visual flair and boundless goofball energy, "Post Concussion" follows Matthew Kang (played by Yoon) as he loses his job, his girlfriend, and much of his ability to think coherently and walk in a straight line.
With a visual verve seldom seen in first features, "Post Concussion" mixes faux educational films about brain trauma with scenes of Kang grappling with morons, hallucinating in front of the television, and stumbling into love.
And the film falls a little short in plumbing certain themes -- the subplot concerning Kang's mother is a little too sketchy to bear the emotional weight it's given at the end of the film.

While the film undisputedly mandates that the object of Hal’s affection possesses profound inner beauty, it only succeeds in shifting the perspective of Hal’s character from an obsession with an idealized female form to an equally ruinous and implausible extreme where the physical component of attraction is of no consequence whatsoever.
By undermining the credibility of the film to accommodate a few mildly amusing visual gags, the Farrellys made an unfortunate and unnecessary choice.
Clearly, the directors intended “Shallow Hal” to be a comedy (and it largely succeeds on that level) but their comedic goals could also have been fully realized within the context of a more absorbing and emotionally resonant feature overall.

Though the material can be variable, there are some inspired gags and delightfully daft routines about, for example, the stool pigeon.
While cross-fertilisation of genres is usually to be welcomed, it would also be nice for Brown to use his brilliant imagination to concentate either on stand-up or on a full theatrical show - rather than this hybrid that falls uneasily between two stools.

Kovacs was the impresario of the sight gag, a genius at off-the-wall antics that made him the Chaplin of TV Comedy.
That is not an exaggeration because sound was usually the least important ingredient in Kovacs' comedy: e.g., Kovacs would be underwater smoking his cigar and trying to blow smoke rings; Kovacs would nail a table and a camera to a platform, tilt it slightly and then try to pour milk into a glass.
Here are all of his great characters as well: Percy Dovetonsils, the cross-eyed, martini-drinking, lisping poet in a smoking jacket; Matzoh Hepplewhite, the world's most inept and clumsy magician; Pierre Ragout, a seedy Frenchman whose charming tales of Paris drove him into exile.
