It was made famous by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, whose vision became what is now a university town (Visva-Bharati University) that attracts thousands of visitors each year.
Gurudev started Patha Bhavana, the school of his ideals, the central premise being that learning in a natural environment would be more enjoyable and fruitful rather than a chore.
Although Visva-Bharati University continues to play an active role, Santiniketan has become a haven for the nouveau riche of India.

Sen was born in Santiniketan, West Bengal, the University town established by the poet Rabindranath Tagore, another Indian Nobel Prize winner.

On March 25, security staff of Uttarayan, Tagore's home inside Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan town, discovered that at least 50 of his memorabilia, including the Nobel gold medal he won in 1913, were missing.
Dilip Sinha, the previous vice chancellor of the university, was arrested for passing off as genuine fake certificates of a teacher at the university.
University authorities have asked the Sweden-based Nobel award's committee for a replica of the medal.

The medal and other belongings of Tagore had vanished when the museum at Visva Bharati University in Shanti Niketan, 200 kilometres north of Calcutta, reopened on Thursday after a two-day break, police said.
He founded the Visva Bharati University in 1901 in a bid to connect learning with nature.
Visva Bharati spokesman Amitava Chowdhury said the university was taking stock of its Tagore collection and had indefinitely closed the museum to visitors.

Terming the incident as 'dangerous', the Chief Minister said that he talked to Visva Bharati Vice-Chancellor Sujit Basu and senior police officers over phone to enquire about the theft.
