Symptoms of severe vitamin B12 deficiency (regardless of the cause) may include burning of the tongue, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, intermittent constipation and diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, menstrual symptoms, psychological symptoms, and nervous system problems, such as numbness and tingling in the feet and hands.
People with a vitamin B12 deficiency due to a malabsorption condition must have an appropriate treatment tailored to their individual needs by a healthcare professional.

 Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 also called Cobalamin is necessary for the production of red blood cells and plays an important role in maintaining the health of nerve cells and in the formation of genetic material.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is most commonly caused by a lack of intrinsic factor, a substance produced in the stomach that is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12 from food.
When intrinsic factor is lacking vitamin B12 is unable to be absorbed and is therefore unable to be utilised by the body.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is frequently caused either by the inability of the small bowel to absorb vitamin B12, or by a lack of food containing vitamin B12.
In the UK, by far the most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency is a lack of 'intrinsic factor', a substance which is produced in the stomach and enables the body to absorb vitamin B12 from the diet.

Vitamin B12 is vital for the formation of blood cells, but other cells in the body, such as nerve cells, require vitamin B12 for proper functioning.
The primary form of treatment for pernicious anemia is a monthly vitamin B12 injection, but treatment depends on a multitude of factors, including the doctor's recommendation, the patient's personal preferences, the patient's overall health and the severity of the disease.

Decreased levels of B12 or folate may be seen with chronic disorders such as liver or kidney disease, alcoholism, and with medications such as phenytoin (an anti-seizure medication), metformin (diabetic therapy), or methotrexate (an arthritis treatment).

If your B12 is in the normal range, then getting B12 supplements is unnecessary and will not be helpful to you in any way, except possibly for placebo value (used for this purpose at times by some GP's for decades).
If indeed you prove to be deficient, this is easily treated either with regular injections (which you can give yourself, have a friend give, or get at the doctor's office), or there alternately is a nasal gel preparation (which I use and much prefer to injections).
In my own situation, I've monitored my B12 blood levels, and found that using this gel once every 6 weeks is sufficient.
