Vito tells Tom that the new son in law is to be given a living, but never be told anything about the family business.
Vito comes in with Sonny's body and asks for the favor back (funeral director is the very first man in the first scene of the movie), that he clean Sonny up so his mother won't have to see him this way.
Vito asks "Is vengeance going to bring your son back to you, or mine to me?"  He tells them he will bring his son back, and if anything happens to Michael he will hold them responsible.

Vito Corleone was loosely based on real-life gangster Lucky Luciano as well as other gangsters, many of whom were born in the village of Corleone.
