Vitreous humour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vitreous humour (British spelling) or Vitreous humor (U.S. spelling) is the clear aqueous solution that fills the space between the lens and the retina of the vertebrate eyeball.
The primary purpose of the vitreous humour is to provide a cushioned support for the rest of the eye, as well as a clear unobstructed path for light to travel to the retina.
The metabolic exchange and equilibration between systemic circulation and vitreous humor is so slow that vitreous humor is sometimes the fluid of choice for postmortem analysis of glucose levels or substances which would be more rapidly diffused, degraded, excreted, or metabolized from the general circulation.

 The Vitreous Humor
The vitreous humor is a clear gel which occupies the posterior compartment of the eye, located between the crystalline lens and the retina and occupying about 80% of the volume of the eyeball.
The flashes of light occur as the vitreous tugs on the sensory layer of the retina as the vitreous is detaching.
As a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) occurs—that is, as the vitreous fluid separates from the retina—organic debris or particles known as “floaters” are released.

Vitreous humor tamponade for the posterior cavity in an eye - Patent 5441989
A vitreous humor tamponade for the posterior cavity in an eye, including at least one perfluorocarbon which is liquid under normal conditions and which after injection in the eye changes into the vapor condition as a result of its vapor pressure.
The high degree of mobility of the incomplete tamponade relative to the rest of the vitreous humor, of gel nature, induces vitreo-retinal stresses which in between 10 and 24% of cases induce secondary retinal holes mostly in the lower circumference (Freeman et al, 1988).
The vitreous humor tamponade according to the present invention means that there is no need for the vitreous humor to be removed by suction beforehand (vitrectomy in accordance with Machemer, 1971).

In the fetus, a small vessel, the arteria hyaloidea, passes forward as a continuation of the arteria centralis retinæ through the vitreous humor to the posterior surface of the capsule of the lens.
In the center of the vitreous body, running from the entrance of the optic nerve to the posterior surface of the lens, is a canal, the hyaloid canal, filled with lymph and lined by a prolongation of the hyaloid membrane.
This canal, in the embryonic vitreous body, conveyed the arteria hyaloidea from the central artery of the retina to the back of the lens.

The vitreous body is bounded posterolaterally by the internal limiting membrane of the retina, anterolaterally by the nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body, and anteriorly by the lens zonular fibers and posterior lens capsule.
Prior to pars plana vitrectomy, the removal of nonclearing vitreous hemorrhage was attempted by excising vitreous gel through the pupillary aperture using cellulose sponges and scissors via a corneoscleral incision, which was coined “open-sky” vitrectomy by Kasner.
The content of the vitreous is 99% water, and the remaining 1% mostly is composed of collagen and hyaluronic acid.

 Eye Conditions > Vitreous Hemorrhage -- EyeMDLink.com
Vitreous hemorrhage is a condition of intraocular (inside the eye) bleeding that usually presents with sudden vision loss, frequently with complaints of floaters or "spots" in the vision.
Occasionally, bleeding from the iris (in the front of the eye) results in the presence of blood in the vitreous humor.
Posterior vitreous separation (separation of the vitreous humor from the retina), common in the middle-aged and elderly, occasionally produces a torn retinal vessel, and therefore a vitreous hemorrhage.

Vitreous humor can be collected in large animals with the use of a 16 to 21 ga needle attached to a 10 ml syringe.  In small animals, the smaller gauge needle and a smaller syringe may be used.  The needle is inserted through the sclera 1 cm caudal to the limbus(corneoscleraljunction).

Terson syndrome is subarachnoid hemorrhage associated with vitreous bleeding caused by rupture of retinal venules and/or capillaries as a result of a sudden increase in intracranial pressure (which is transmitted to the retinal vasculature via the optic nerve).
The vitreous hemorrhage-induced glaucoma is secondary to the blockade of the trabecular meshwork by formed ghost cells due to long-standing blood cells in the vitreous.
Similarly, vitreous hemorrhage within the space between the internal limiting and the nerve fiber layer may resemble that within the retrohyaloid space, except that the blood does not shift with change in the head position as may be the case with subhyaloid hemorrhage.

Since plasma and vitreous ANP concentrations were found to be unrelated, we suggest intraocular ANP synthesis and/or an increase in the release of ANP into the vitreous, as opposed to diffusion from the blood, as the main factors contributing to the high vitreous ANP levels observed in diabetic patients.
Undiluted vitreous humor samples were collected at the time of vitreoretinal surgery by using a syringe attached to an automated vitrector before starting the intravitreal infusion of balanced salt solution.
Vitreous ANP levels were highest in diabetic patients with active PDR (median 60.5 pg/ml, range 57.60-68.5 pg/ml; n=19), followed by diabetic patients with quiescent PDR (median 43.20 pg/ml, range 41.50-45.00 pg/ml; n=3) and those with diabetes without PDR (median 23.1 pg/ml, range 22.10-25.05 pg/ml; n=28) and controls (median, 15.6 pg/ml, range 14.75-16.8 pg/ml; n=29).

The condition is not due to bleeding of the vitreous humor, but rather bleeding from the retinal vessels or underlying choroid (layer of capillaries beneath the retina) in most cases.
Unfortunately, the blood vessels that grow in response to this chemical are abnormal - they grow from the retina into the vitreous gel and may bleed causing a vitreous hemorrhage.
Patients with acute vitreous hemorrhage frequently seek emergency care because the loss of vision is dramatic.

Medical Humor(s) - Health and Medical Information produced by doctors - MedicineNet.com
The aqueous humor and the vitreous humors are fluids within the eye.
The aqueous humor is the watery fluid normally present in the chambers of the eye around the iris while the vitreous humor is the "glassy" fluid behind the lens in the eyeball.
The humors (humours, in England) originated in an ancient theory that held that health came from a balance between the bodily liquids.

A vitreous hemorrhage occurs when retinal blood vessels rupture and bleed into the vitreous humor.
Because of the absence of a validated and generally accepted medical definition of the various densities of vitreous hemorrhage, we classify a vitreous hemorrhage as either mild, moderate or severe depending on the density of the vitreous hemorrhage as observed by the physician:
Based on data compiled by Business Genetics, we commissioned in February 1999, we believe that approximately 450,000 cases of vitreous hemorrhage occur each year in the United States, a total of 400,000 cases occur each year in the five largest European markets and 190,000 cases occur each year in Japan.

Posterior vitreous detachment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is an ocular condition in which there is a separation of the vitreous humor from the retina.
Over time the vitreous changes, shrinking and developing pockets of liquefaction, similar to the way a gelatin dessert shrinks, or detaches, from the edge of a pan over time.
When a posterior vitreous detachment occurs, there is also the possibility of a tear in the retina.
