Vittorio Jano was born on April 22, 1891 in San Giorgio Canavese, the son of the Technical Director at one of Turin's two arsenals.
Jano first car, the P2, was based on knowledge he had gained at Fiat and at the first race Antonio Ascari drove the new car to victory.
Jano, who had known Enzo Ferrari from his earliest Alfa Romeo days joined Ferrari full-time and was instrumental in establishing a firm foundation for Ferrari's future racing efforts.

Jano was transferred to aero-engine design and it took several months of campaigning before Ferrari was allowed to run the P3s.
In 1923 Vittorio Jano was lured away from Fiat, partly thanks to the persuasion of a young Alfa racing driver named Enzo Ferrari, to replace Merosi as chief designer at Alfa Romeo.
For Alfa road cars Jano developed a series of small-to-medium-displacement 4, 6, and 8 cylinder inline power plants based on the P2 unit that established the classic architecture of Alfa engines, with light alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chambers, centrally-located plugs, two rows of overhead valves per cylinder bank and dual overhead cams.

Vittorio Jano, Alfa's chief engineer and designer of the 8C2300, felt the Monza, with only 150 horsepower in a 850 kilogram (1870 lbs) chassis, would not be fast enough.
Jano obviously had little faith in what is now recognized to be hi masterpiece, and in early 1931 he obtained permission from the directors to construct a U12 (yes, U12, not V12) car based on two 1750 engines, with two gearboxes, driveshafts, and final drives.
Jano had probably overrated the competition (primarily the Type 51 Bugatti) and underestimated his own skills because the Monza won the championship for Alfa in 1931 and continued victorious into 1932, when in was superseded by the P-3.

Jano used a creative innovation to avoid crank whip: he divided the inline eight into two blocks of four cylinders, essentially two four-cylinder motors mounted front to back on a common crankcase.
In response to new economic realities, Jano reverted to a 2.3 L 6-cylinder engine to produce a car that was smaller and cheaper than the 8 cylinder Alfas, although still neither small nor cheap in absolute terms.
Jano, unable to satisfy Mussolini's desire for victory, was forced out in 1938 and went to work for Lancia.

Vittorio Jano had been practically a contemporary of Vincenzo Lancia and was a fellow FIAT alumnus, having started as an engineering assistant there in 1911.

The 12C-37s were the final Grand Prix Alfa Romeos designed by Vittorio Jano and raced by the Scuderia Ferrari before Enzo Ferrari became race director of Alfa Corse at the end of the 1937 Season.
While Jano’s 12C-36 was an overwhelming success, he was under mounting pressure to improve upon the design with an emphasis on better handling as well as additional horsepower.
Jano had left Alfaand gone over to Lancia, so Enzo Ferrari was put in dfrect charge of the new arrangement at the works.

When Bazzi moved to Alfa Romeo in 1923 he urged his assistant to join him and Jano arrived in time to design the Alfa Romeo P2 which appeared for the first time at the French GP of 1924, with Giuseppe Campari winning the race.
In 1930 Varzi was joined by Tazio Nuvolari and the competition department was gradually taken over by Enzo Ferrari, leaving the factory to race the new sportscars.
Jano was transferred to aero-engine design although his cars were later successful, notably when Nuvolari drove a remarkable race to win the German GP at the Nurburgring in 1935 in a Ferrari-run P3.
