Stanshall was apparently forcibly taught BBC English by his father, who returned from the war "a changed man".
In 1992 and 1993, Stanshall was plagued by ill-health, the results of his tranquiliser addiction and alcoholism, which saw him spend a couple of lengthy periods in hospital.
Viv Stanshall died in a fire at his London flat sometime during the early hours of March 6th, 1995.

Stanshall was often called a "great British eccentric", but this was a label he hated as it suggested that he was putting on an act, whereas he always insisted that he was merely being himself — which is arguably a requirement for genuine eccentricity.
Stanshall reprises the role of Hubert, reciting a weird poem loosely based on Edward Lear's The Owl and the Pussycat, at the end of which all the diners produce oars and row the table offscreen.
Stanshall's remarkable and instantly recognizable voice won him several commercial voice-overs, including a campaign for Cadbury's Creme Eggs which involved a reworking of the Bonzos' song "Mister Slater's Parrot", under the title of "Mister Cadbury's Parrot".

Timeless eccentric Viv Stanshall entertained listeners for years on the Peel program with his periodical saga "Sir Henry At Rawlinson End".
I was listening to some of these sessions the other day and I don't think these recording have ever seen a commercial release which is a pity.
Viv tragically died after a fire at his flat in 1985.

Stanshall was the gold-lamé-wearing showman of the group, parodying smarmy American lounge singers (listen to Look At Me, I'm Wonderful from Keynsham), as well as the dadaist stream of consciousness ramblings that permeate the later LP's (Rhinocratic Oaths from The Doughnut in Granny's Greenhouse).
Stanshall was known for his Elvis long before it was fashionable or a lifestyle.
Viv talks about the band he's with and its members ("I'm King Kripple in the band...we got a hunchback drummer...") Hard rockin' and very funny.

Stanshall would form the short lived Sean Head Showband which had included Eric Clapton before forming biG GRunt with Spear.
Stanshall (who's narration was recorded for Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells and David Bowie's Peter And The Wolf) would release several solo albums as well as appearing on his own Viv Stanshall's Radio Flashes for the BBC.
Sadly, Stanshall lost his life in a fire at his flat in 1995.

Viv Stanshall was one of pop music's most outrageous figures.
After the break-up of the Bonzos, Stanshall embarked on a series of solo projects, most notably the tales of Rawlinson End, which detailed the hilarious exploits of the aristocratic Sir Henry.
A life of extremes, the highs were his renowned pranks with The Who's Keith Moon, whilst the lows saw him prone to schizophrenic depression, drug addiction and alcoholism which led to his being accused of attempting to murder his wife and his final sad demise in a house fire.

Many hoped that Viv would go on to a solo career, but he had a nervous breakdown following a series of disasters and, like so many rock musicians of the 60s, he became a heavy drinker, went on many binges with other hellraisers, including Keith Moon from The Who.
Viv never made a comeback, being hired for just a few TV ad's and making the odd guest appearance here and there.
Viv died in a fire at his flat in Muswell Hill, London on 5th March 1995 leaving a son and a daughter.

The indescribable "My Pink Half of the Drainpipe" stops dead in the middle for Stanshall to present "Rodney's bass saxophone solo, as promised".

Very tight and funny (his three necked electric blues guitar - one string on each neck tuned to E, A and B - was a particular hit.) Stanshall so drunk he couldn't speak let alone sing - onstage for about 5 minutes.
I seem to remember that Spear got paid, and Stanshall was allowed to keep the bottle of vodka from the rider.
I am quite envious as the only time I got to see Stanshall was in 1990 which, it must be said, was somewhat past his heyday.

So long as you don't ask what it's about, and take it as a gleeful exercise in the surrealism of the English language, you'll love this disc by the late Stanshall.

While attending art school under the well-known pop artist Peter Blake (the designer of the Beatles' famed Sgt. Pepper album cover), Stanshall formed the Bonzo Dog Dada Band with flatmate Rodney Slater and fellow student Larry Smith in 1962.
Later shortened to simply the Bonzo Dog Band, the satirical group became highly successful before creative differences triggered their break-up in 1970.

Vivian Stanshall was an eccentric pioneer that pushed boundaries in music, comedy, poetry and art and won a legion of fans, including John Peel in the process.
In the mid-1960s he led the group Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, who caused a stir on the college rock circuit and had a Top 10 hit in 1968 with 'I'm the Urban Spaceman'.
Vivian launched his alter-ego character, Sir Henry on Peel's Top Gear show and it was so successful with listeners that he was asked to continue the skit when Peel returned from holidays.

This was the third session Viv recorded for the Peel program and I am not 100% sure I've got the titles right, but I'm sure someone will correct me if their wrong.
