His drawl of a voice can either be endearing -- like the friend by the campfire trying to entertain during the twilight hours -- or irritating, like the pretentious café "ahr-TEEST" that drowns out your conversation with his rambling lyrics.
Gone in Viva Last Blues is any semblance of structure, as Oldham's teetering voice and cryptic lyrics don't ever seem to have any final destination.

Former Palace Brother Will Oldham -- the artist formerly not particularly well known as Push -- seems to have found himself, or at least lost the desire to cloak his rootsy exploits in various permutations of the Palace moniker.
He's also made a full recovery from the rickety acoustic regression of last year's Arise Therefore (a Palace release on Drag City), instead picking up where '95's organ-, piano-, and electric guitar-fortified Viva Last Blues (a Palace Music release on Drag City) left off.
Plugging back in, he leads a loose yet sure-footed ensemble through a dozen folk-based numbers that bring to mind the young Dylan and early Neil Young without sounding quite like either.

"The Brute Choir" (originally from Viva Last Blues) is transformed from being a cacophony of Crazy Horse guitars and prairie dog vocals into a serene sweeping ballad and "I am Cinematographer" (from Days in the Wake) is turned into a joyous sing-a-along rave-up.
Whilst of course "New Partner" (Viva Last Blues), "Agnes, Queen of Sorrow" (from the mini-album Hope), and "Gulf Shores" (a B-side collected on Lost Blues and Other Songs) were damn near perfect in their more primitive former lives, their reincarnations are still supremely affecting.
An attempt to move "No More Workhorse Blues" (Days in the Wake) away from its dusty back-porch and on to a bigger musical platform only ends in an overwrought strangulation.

The song sheds more light onto the core message of the album, that the blue collar worker is too easily swayed to live beyond their means and that those who can't live simply become imprisoned by debt.

Perhaps that's why, at her last NYC appearance, she truly shone on covers like "Mad Tom of Bedlam," when she laid down her fiddle and 21st-century self-consciousness and sang as if possessed.
The epic opener, "My Home is the Sea," finds Oldham in rare form, recalling the loose whiskey-rock of Viva Last Blues with the pensive, bold lyrical precision that accompanies all of his best work.

Steve Albini actually holds production duties on this album, and while his influence isn't immediately apparent, there are some tracks that hang loose and rock on this album, Neil Young style.

The fuller tone of these songs, colored to a great degree by Liam Hayes' Hammond organ, is reminiscent of Dylan's initial Nashville forays — particularly the hypnotic "Agnes, Queen of Sorrow."
Hayes makes his presence felt even more expansively on Viva Last Blues, which sees another change of name (this time in order to pay tribute to Palace Music, the sire of superstar racehorse Cigar).
With more reliance on organ, piano and what sounds like analog synth (although none is credited), songs like "Tonight's Decision (and Thereafter)" and "New Partner" advance a bit too far into country-rock territory, but there are enough moments of utter obsession (like the ecstatic "Old Jerusalem") to satisfy unreconstructed Luddites.
