Civet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 32 species of civet (pronounced /ˈsɪvɪt/), genet, and linsang make up the family Viverridae.
Furthermore, recent genetic research indicates that the Asiatic linsangs of the genus Prionodon are not true viverrids but rather more closely related to the Felidae.
The Madagascan fossa Cryptoprocta ferox was similarly long thought to be a member of the Viverridae, but genetic evidence indicates that this animal is a member of an endemic Madagascan carnivore radiation related to the Herpestidae.

Family Viverridae or civets, genets, linsangs, and relatives
notcat cats the civet cat, of the family Viverridae, is closely related to the mongoose.
The civet family (Viverridae) is in the suborder Fissipedia and is a close relative of the cat family (Felidae) (32).
The common ancestor of the Viverridae is thought to have split from the common ancestor of the hyenas only about 25 million years ago (Ewer 1973).

Transient masculinization in the fossa, Cryptoprocta ferox (Carnivora, Viverridae).
In at least 9 mammalian species, females are masculinized throughout life, but the benefits of this remain unclear despite decades of thorough study, in particular of the spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta) in which the phenomenon has been associated with a high fitness cost.
Through examination of wild and captive fossas (Cryptoprocta ferox, Viverridae), androgen assays, and DNA typing for confirmation of gender, we made the first discovery of transient masculinization of a female mammal.

The members of the family Viverridae are characterised by the presence of scent glands external to the anal region (Wozencraft 1989a).
The members of the family Herpestidae are characterised by the uniquely derived nature of their anal sac and the structure of the auditory bulla (Wozencraft 1989a).
They are distinguished from the members of the family Viverridae by the presence of a naked glandular pouch around the anus, with the anal glands opening into the pouch.

Although sometimes referred to as cats, civets are not felines.
They do, however, have catlike bodies and may climb trees, but are members of the family Viverridae, rather than Felidae.
Native to Africa, Asia, and southern parts of Europe, there are about 15 to 20 identified species of civet, although some of these are in danger of extinction.

Among the Viverridae are 35 different genera and 66 different species, including the civets, genets, mongooses and meerkats (Online Source).
On first observation, the dwarf mongoose resembles rodents, but upon closer inspection, some important differences show themselves, mainly in terms of facial features, teeth and body size.

The subfamily Viverrinae (Carnivora, Feliformia, Viverridae) has a much debated systematics, which is representative of the taxonomic imbroglio prevailing within the "catch-all" family Viverridae.
Viverrinae are constituted by a set of species with heteroclite morphotypes: the Terrestrial Civets, large and digitigrade (Civettictis, Viverra and Viverricula), the Genets, smaller, thinner and semi-digitigrade (Genetta), and a set of taxa with atypical morphological characteristics, the Genet-like taxa (Prionodon, Poiana and Osbornictis).
The subfamily Viverrinae, consisting of a set of heteroclite morphotypes (also within genus Genetta), is characterized by a remarkable morphological lability, and viverrine lineages seem to have been the subject of important extinction rates.

The binturong's face is lighter in color than its body; binturongs are very similar in appearance to raccoons, badgers or wolverines.
ADAPTATIONS: Only members of the viverridae family have bursae (slitlike pockets along the edge of the ears, and scent glands).
The binturong's scent glands are located in such a position that as the animal moves through the trees, the gland drags on branches, leaving a trail of scent behind (the odor is said to be similar to that of popcorn).

We undertook a case study on the morphological evolution of viverrid-like feliformians (Nandinia, Cryptoprocta, Fossa, Eupleres, Prionodon) and built the largest morphological matrix concerning the suborder Feliformia to date.
A total of 349 characters grouped into four anatomical partitions were used for all species of Viverridae and viverrid-like taxa plus representatives of the Felidae, Hyaenidae, Herpestidae, and one Malagasy mongoose.
These results support the removal from the traditionally held Viverridae of several viverrid-like taxa into three distinct families: Nandiniidae (Nandinia), Prionodontidae (Prionodon), and the newly defined Eupleridae (including Cryptoprocta, Fossa, Eupleres plus all “mongoose-like” Malagasy taxa).

Therefore, pursuant to 42 CFR 71.32(b) and in accordance with this order, no person may import or attempt to import any civets (Family: Viverridae), whether dead or alive, or any products derived from civets.
This prohibition does not apply to any person who imports or attempts to import products derived from civets if such products have been properly processed to render them noninfectious so that they pose no risk of transmitting or carrying the SARS virus.
