Poy is the daughter of Richard Charles Lee (利銘澤; pinyin: Lǐ Míngzé), who is the son of famous businessman Hysan Lee in Hong Kong, and Esther Yewpick Lee (黃瑤璧) and the sister-in-law of Adrienne Clarkson, who was Governor General of Canada from 1999 to 2005.
Vivienne Poy's husband Dr. Neville Poy, a retired plastic surgeon, is Adrienne Clarkson's brother.

Poy is the first member of a visible minority to become chancellor of U of T. In 1998, she had broken another barrier by becoming Canada’s first senator of Asian descent.
As chancellor, Poy hopes to be a role model for young people, especially those who are visible minorities, and plans to foster open communications with students by scheduling times when the door to her Simcoe Hall office will be open to all.

Three years ago, Poy enjoyed the afternoon of a lifetime when she received her PhD in history and was installed as Chancellor of the University of Toronto in the span of 15 minutes.
