Born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, at Simbirsk (later called Ulyanovsk in his honor), he was the son of a school and civil service official and was drawn early to the revolutionary cause, especially when his brother, Aleksandr I. Ulyanov, was executed (1887) for his participation in a plot on the life of Alexander III.
Lenin was in Switzerland during the early years of World War I. In his view the war was an imperialist struggle; since imperialism was "the final stage of capitalism," it was a historical necessity that the war would offer opportunities for a revolution of the proletariat.
Lenin concluded that Russia was now ripe for a socialist revolution, arguing that the moderate provisional government represented the bourgeoisie whereas the soviets represented, in his words, a revolutionary democratic dictatorship of the proletariat and peasantry.

This radicalized Vladimir (his official Soviet biographies have this event as central to Lenin's revolutionary exploits) and later that year he was arrested, and expelled from Kazan University for participating in student protests.
It is often argued that Lenin countermanded proletarian emancipation and democracy (worker's control through the soviets or workers' councils) and that this paved the road to Stalinism.
Lenin's wife discovered the paper in Lenin's study, and read it to the central committee, who while believing parts of it, did not take it to heart, and as such, these sharp criticisms of the internal party were not more widely released.

Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Владимир Ильич Ульянов) (April 10 (O.S.) = April 22 (N.S.), 1870 - January 21, 1924) who changed his surname to Lenin (Ленин) (most likely a reference to the river Lena), was a Russian revolutionary, first leader of the Soviet Union, and the namesake of Leninism.
Although he is sometimes referred to in the West as "Nikolai Lenin", he has never been known as this in Russia.
He was born in Simbirsk and died in Leninskie Gorki; after a series of strokes exacerbated by an attempted assassination.

The city of Petrograd was renamed Leningrad in his honor; this remained the name of the city until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, when it reverted to its original name, St Petersburg.After his first stroke, Lenin published a number of papers indicating future directions for the government.
