Shatalov pushes his idea for a manually flown spacecraft rendezvous, provided that Soyuz 7 and 8 visually acquire each other immediately after Soyuz 8 is put into orbit.
Shatalov fires his engines four times, but in the absence of any indication to the pilot of range to the target, he could not get into a position for a safe docking.
Shatalov's crew arrived at 09:00 aboard a Tu-104 and were ensconced in Room 14 of the Hotel Kosmonavt.

Voice communications are lost with Shatalov whenever the television camera is turned on, but it is decided just to leave the camera off and proceed with the launch.
As Shatalov exits from the spacecraft, he jokes that he has set a new record: shortest space flight, and first to return to its exact point of lift-off.

In 1971, Shatalov made his third flight aboard Soyuz 10.

On 8 October 1985, in connection with the International Astronautical Congress in Stockholm, Yuri P Semenov and Cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov visited my employer, the Swedish Space Corporation, and I had the opportunity to attend both a lunch for them and a subsequent meeting.
At that time Semenov was not a well known figure, and I certainly took notice when he introduced himself as the "Technical Director for the Soyuz-Salyut-Progress Complex".
Vladimir Shatalov was naturally a well-known cosmonauts since his flights on Soyuz-4, -8, and -10.
