Vladimir Žerjavić (August 2, 1912 - September 5, 2001) was a Croatian economist and a United Nations specialist who published a series of articles and books during the 1980s and 1990s in which he argued that the scope of the Holocaust in World War II-era Croatia was exaggerated.
Had genocide of such monstruous proportions as those for whom Zerjavic is a bete noire claim really happened, this would certainly have left a vast and all-too-visible hole in the country’s demographics.

After the artificially created euphoria is over, and once peace is established, all reasonable and objective Serbians will --I strongly believe -- realize that their common life with Croatians, in a state with a prosperous economic future, is the mostacceptable solution for them.

Trial of Dinko Sakic - chronology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Investigating the number of WWII victims in the former Yugoslavia, Zerjavic arrived at a figure of 1,027,000 victims, of whom, according to his estimates, up to 85,000 were killed in the Jasenovac and Stara Gradiska concentration camps.
The witness said he was prompted to investigate these data by the manipulation of the number of victims, which Yugoslavia inflated in order to receive as large war reparations as possible from Germany and Italy.
Allowing for the possible inaccuracy of his data of some 25-30 per cent, Zerjavic concluded that a maximum of 85,000 people could have been killed in the two camps and that no new research would yield higher figures.

Zerjavic's estimates and assumptions span from 1931 to 1948, but estimating a decreased growth rate on the Yugoslav level, he cannot estimate that for Serbs in Bosnia nor Croatia.
To support his claim, Zerjavic mentioned that in 1931 only one Roma was registered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which to a person unfamiliar with Bosnian history would imply that there were no Roma in Bosnia ever.
The 1948 census proves that all 40,000 Roma from NDH were indeed exterminated in Jasenovac, and that Zerjavic's "calculations" are false and a mockery of victims.

Kocovic's and Zerjavic's result confirm the earlier figures which Yugoslavia presented to Germany, but which were not substantiated by the figure reached in 1964 census.
Of course, he does not "see" this, but feels it is acceptable to simply say that their results are inaccurate and to continue to claim that Jasenovac claimed 700,000 victims, that is, a number that is more than 70% of the number which Yugoslavia presented to Germany in 1963.

Concerning the number of casualties during WW 2 in ex-Yugoslavia along ethnic lines is well established by Vladimir Zerjavic- whatever the likes of Zuroff or Wiesenthal may think and feel about it.
If/when his figures are corrected, that will happen as the result of serious historical and demographic analysis- and not as the "fruit" of obsessions stemming from Greater Serbia propaganda.
The only reason Zerjavic has even the least of credibility is the fact that unlike Tudjman, he didn't apply his methods to Holocaust as a whole, even though that can be done, and it wouldn't look too good for him.

Zerjavic also claims that during WW II, the Ustashe killed 83,000 Serbs, Jews, Roma, and Croatian anti-fascists at the Jasenovac concentration camp, although the number of killed has been augmented in various propaganda claims over the decades, climbing to 700,000.

Croatia had a total Jewish population of less than 20,000 before WW2, while over 500,000 of the pre-war Serb population of just over 600,000 survived the war (with the approximately 100,000 lost being the result of ALL CAUSES).

During the 1980s, however, independent research into the question by two men, Bogoljub Kocovic, an emigre Serb, and Vladimir Zerjavic, a Croat, produced very similar results.
Both investigations were based not on body counts or survivors' recollections but on computer analysis of census returns and demographic indices.
According to Kocovic, whose figures are marginally higher than those of Zerjavic, a total of about 1,014,000, or 6.4 per cent of Yugoslavia's 1941 population, died during or in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War on all sides.

In the meantime, it is very difficult to take the investigation seriously when Krunoslav Fehir publicly pitted Josip Fehir, his father and Glavaš loyalist, against his ex-wife who stood by her son's testimony.
