Vladislav Vančura (born 1891, died 1942) was one of the most important Bohemian ( Czech) writers of the 20th century.
Vancura's fifth novel Hrdelni pre anebo Prislovi (Criminal Dispute or the Proverbs) published 1930 in Aventinum Publishing House, Prague, was not very popular in its time; it is most complicated of Vancura's novels, quite interesting text between detective novel and tractate on noetics.

 Vladislav Vancura - 13-11-2002 - Radio Prague
Vladislav Vancura was born in 1891 in the small town of Haj near Opava in Moravia, where his father was the administrator of a sugar refinery.
Vancura's novels are a kind of 'optimistic vision' of the world, a return to the Renaissance period of lively characters that enjoy life with all its attributes.
Although Vancura did have a chance to leave Czechoslovakia, which was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1939 to 1945, and declared the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, he decided to stay and play an active role in the struggle against the Nazi regime.

This work which analyses the writings of an outstanding Czech interwar avantgarde prose writer (and member of the communist party) Vladislav Vancura is a strictly Marxist defence of experimentation in the field of narrative fiction.
Vancura, was tackling what Kundera saw as a serious problem: how to create convincing and yet topical fiction, with active and independent characters, acting out major conflicts, although he was living in the era of "stagnant, alienated, dehumanising and decomposing capitalism, a time when dramatic conflict between proud, independently acting individuals was no longer possible".
In the study, Kundera attempts to show by what stylistic and thematic devices Vancura tried to overcome this conflict and how he learnt from the history of the European novel as he was doing so.

Based on a novel by Vladislav Vancura, the film abounds in haunting, hallucinatory animal imagery that evokes a profoundly predatory and alien world.
The production was painstakingly prepared by Vlácil, who insisted on absolute historical authenticity in the costumes, props and sets; he also secluded cast and crew away for an extended stay in the Šumava forest in order to immerse them, physically and psychologically, in the harsh conditions they would be portraying.

Menzel - (By Mira & Antonin J. Liehm - 1977) - Movies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Hrabal's tragicomic everyday absurdity found a congenial poet in Menzel, who viewed life with an attitude of artful irony, and at the same time with an almost philosophical understanding for the tragicomic non-heroes of his films.
Menzel proved equally at home making the film version of twentieth-century Czech classic by Vladislav Vancura, the sagely ironic parable of illusion and reality, "Capricious Summer" ("Rozmarne leto" - 1967).
On the other hand, the mystery comedies of Josef Skvorecky, "Crime at the Girl's School" ("Zlocin v divci skole" - 1965), and "Crime at the Nightclub" ("Zlocin v santanu" - 1968), were too different in style and too abstractly literary to provide Menzel enough specific human material for his compassionate irony.
