In 1932 the war memorial to her son Peter - The Parents - was dedicated at Vladslo military cemetery in Flanders.
[That is the meaning] of Vladslo: in the midst of a Great War battlefield returned to farmland, holding together the remains of the fallen and the gestures of the survivors.
In August 1932 a war memorial was unveiled at the Roggevelde German war cemetery, near Vladslo in Flemish Belgium: a sculpture of two parents mourning their son, killed in October 1914· It is the work of Kathe Kollwitz.

 Soldatenfriedhof: Vladslo
Created during the war this cemetery originally held the remains of 3,233 German soldiers, however in 1956 a number of smaller cemeteries were concentrated into Vladslo and it now marks the resting place of 25,644 soldiers.
As time went by the symbolisation of one pair of parents became more symbolic of all parents grieving over a lost child.
When Peter's grave was moved to Vladslo the statues were brought with him.

In fact, it was the fate and flight of the Vandevelde family from Vladslo during and shortly after the war that brought the family (of 17) from the very port of Nieuwpoort to American shores and eventually here to Monroe, Michigan.
The Vandeveldes were finally evacuated and sent to a village far from West Flanders toward the end of the war while all of Vladslo -including their home- was completely destroyed.
As fate would have it, one of her first connections was with Andre Mingneau who happened to have been born and raised in Vladslo.

 A German Talbot House at Vladslo ? -- Kaiserliche Marine
Again I know, I can't help it !
Just on the other side of the road where now is located the German military cimitary with the famous Käthe Kollwitz statues at Vladslo stands a very German looking farm.
I had always found this intriging and finally found out that this place must have been the German version of the British' Talbot House at Poperinge.
