  Vlastimil Hort - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hort was born in Kladno, Czechoslovakia and was a citizen of Czechoslovakia for the first part of his chess career, winning national championships in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, and 1977.
Hort participated in a number of Zonal and Interzonal qualifying tournaments to select a challenger for the world title, generally with good results but without reaching the final stages of the Candidates process.
Hort's long-standing reputation as one of the great sportsmen of chess was enhanced by an event during this match.

Kavalek had left his country in 1969; Hort was still living in Prague.

Hort, playing Black, had about four minutes left on the clock to reach move 40 and his hand hovered over his queen, wanting to play the winning move 35...Qg4.
However Hort's brain refused to let his hand make the move and the many spectators were forced to watch the excruciating spectacle of Hort allowing his clock to tick to zero, losing the game on time.
Despite heroic efforts in the final game of the match, Hort could only draw, allowing Spassky to progress to the semi-finals and leaving an enormous psychological scar on Hort, who never again reached the finals of the World Championship.

It was really great to visit this very traditional tournament - especially the large number (about 1500) of players and visitors was impressing.
Listening to the game comments of Hans Böhm and Vlastimil Hort in the big exhibition hall was as enjoyable as watching the grandmasters nearby in the tournament hall.
After a day of rest, the players in the Grandmaster Group A continued where they had left off resulting in another round of fierce battles.

eterans Lajos Portisch - a world championship candidate for decades - and Vlastimil Hort (during his career peak in the mid-1970s the no. 4 in the world rating list) have already played a lot of games with Bobby Fischer.
After the former world champion disappeared from the chess scene they met him in secrecy in Budapest and practised his 'type' of new chess, in which the initial position is determined by drawing lots.
Hort is highly enthusiastic about Chess960 which means that opening theory no longer applies.

Vlastimil Hort of Czechoslovakia put on an amazing exhibition of simultaneous chess in Iceland in April, 1977 when he played 550 opponents, 201 simultaneously, and lost only 10 games, in just over thirty hours.
Hort went on to set the record for the most consecutive games played, in October, 1984 in Porz, Germany.

However, throughout all this he was protesting that his forfeit loss against Gipslis was incorrect, and when he was informed that said forfeit had to stand, he once again indicated his intent to withdraw.
He forfeited his next scheduled game against Vlastimil Hort, despite various officials trying to convince him to play.
The day after this second forfeit, Fischer indicated that he intended to complete the rest of the tournament after all.
