  Vlora`s History
Vlora was incorporated in Ali Pash‘ Tepelena's kingdom in 1812.
In 1920, the National Defense Committee was formed in Vlora, which organized the forces that fought in the War of Vlora, which was fought between the Albanians and Italians over the control of the town, after the Italians refused to coincide to the ultimatum of the government of Tirana to hand over the city.
Vlora remained a center of democratic movements, in April, 1924, a committee was formed here, which led an uprising against King Zog's rule, which eventually led to the June Revolution, and the establishment of the first democratic government of Albania.

Vlora, Albania; 25 October 2001 (RFE/RL) -- Earlier this month, the high tide washed ashore near the Albanian port of Vlora the body of a young man, whom local police identified as a victim of the trafficking in refugees.
Vlora's police department so far this year has impounded 35 boats, filed charges against 92 persons for human trafficking, and blocked some 7,000 people from leaving for Italy illegally.

VLORA, Albania (AP) - Police fired water cannons and plastic bullets Wednesday at thousands of Albanian protesters infuriated by the failure of another investment scheme that swallowed up their savings.
Officers fired into the air from a police van as it cruised along a boulevard of this southern port city, and masked policemen beat up one demonstrator until he lay bloody and motionless on the ground.
The protest began after the Gjallica investment fund, based in Vlora, announced that it would not pay investors on Thursday as it had promised when it shut its doors several weeks ago.

On June 12, just southwest of Vlora, the garrison of Tepelena held by 400 Italians surrendered, and when the Albanians stormed the inner defenses of Vlora, itself, a terrific battle took place, but the Albanians were driven back with severe losses because of heavy gunfire from the Italian warships.
The Vlora battle was an unpopular war even in Italy where Italo-Albanians, the Arbereshe, set up a protest that was heard all over Italy, especially in its Chamber of Deputies.
On July 23, Vlora was again savagely attacked by the Albanians who now gained partial control of the town.
