 Damaging Vocal Techniques
In a flat-tongued technique, the singer is primarily using a technique which does not allow for a healthy change of register as one ascends upward within any scale or arpeggio.
This smile of the mouth technique raises the larynx, drops the palate, invites the jaw to move forward, the tone to be bright and thin, and usually the singer is flat in pitch.
All of this occurred because of the swelling of the vocal cords due to breathy singing.

An interest in collecting and codifying vocal sounds led to the definition of the term "extended vocal techniques" and to the production of the EVTE Lexicon which is described in Chapter 2 along with two later catalogues of sounds.
Chapter 3 introduces the question of usage, and describes the various applications of extended vocal techniques to performer-oriented improvisation and composition with the incumbent emotional, psychological and spiritual associations.
Observations are made regarding the artistic and aesthetic value of applied extended vocal techniques, based on the idea that certain applications are allied with the concept of vocal vanguardism and with individual avant-garde movements, whereas others relate to more universal principles of artistic expression.

Some chanters, particularly in the more remote and isolated areas, have an unusual vocal technique which is heard in many primitive cultures and among the Celtic peoples: a type of vocal accenting where a note is approached by momentarily singing a third, fourth or fifth above the pitch before dropping to the pitch.
This type of vocal technique is not very common, except for the thrice daily "Forgiveness" performed (in the Old Rite) at the end of Compline, Midnight Office and the Hours.

Ethan Winer: The Truth About Vocal Eliminators   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
You can reduce the level of a vocal (or other lead instrument) in a stereo recording by taking advantage of how vocals are generally recorded: in mono and placed centered in the mix.
Since the vocal track is present in both the left and right channels equally, you can, in theory, remove it or at least reduce its level by subtracting one channel from the other.
One important drawback inherent in vocal removal is that, by definition, it reduces a stereo mix to mono.

FOCUS - February 7, 2003 - LARYNGOLOGY: New Techniques in Vocal Cord Surgery Spare the Voice
It is hard to believe that the source of the purest, sweetest singing voice is two small folds of tissue drubbing together at high speed in the middle of the throat, that even the most delicate aria is born of pressure and force.
Zeitels developed the technique of infusion, in which liquid is injected into the subepithelial tissue; if the tumor rises, it has not yet invaded the ligament and musculature.
With their vocal folds vibrating at full volume for long periods of time, singers and orators often develop bumps, polyps, and rough surfaces on the tissues.

Computer-aided musical analysis of extended vocal techniques for compositional applications   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Phenomena of co-oscillation between the vocal folds and other structures may cause amplitude modulation on a quasi-periodic glottal signal, thus establishing subharmonics and their integer partials.
Such phenomena may include the participation of the false vocal folds (vocal-ventricular mode, VVM, found in Tibetan and Mongolian chants), epiglottis (vocal growl, used in Jazz and Pop music), and segregated mass-spring subsystems within the vocal folds (hypothesised in the case of vocal fry or creaky voice).
In addition, cases of biphonation (diplophonia), where the pair of vocal folds oscillates at two or more different frequencies are considered.

Usually I use the 1st as a main lead vocal, 2nd as a natural delay and put it gently under the 1st and use the 3rd lightly for some natural reverb - tweaking volume to taste.

 Singing and the Alexander Technique
As Rodd-Marling says in her definition of singing, the vocal and breathing mechanism is set in motion by the desire to express oneself and to communicate.
The healthy tension in the vocal cords needed for top notes (which is dependent on the stability of the elastic scaffolding) is thereby suddenly and dramatically reduced and the note sounds as if it has cracked or split.
And in comparison to the vocal mechanism, the musculature of the breathing organ is larger and more powerful---capable of doing a lot of good if in proper condition, and equally capable of doing a lot of mischief if not.
