VOCALOID Singing Synthesis Software by Yamaha
New Yamaha VOCALOID Singing Synthesis Software Generates Superb Vocals On A PC Yamaha Corporation has developed new software that allows song writers to generate authentic-sounding singing on their PCs by simply inputting the words and notes of their compositions.
VOCALOID vocal-synthesizing software overcomes a major hurdle composers have faced until now due to the limitations that technology has placed on their ability to freely create songs incorporating singing.
VOCALOID itself consists of a score editor, which does the scale, song-word, and expression processing; the Vocal Sound Generator, the engine that synthesizes the vocals; and libraries (each comprised of a pronunciation database and a timbre database) for each vocal.

Software puts world-class soul singers on tap - 25 November 2003 - New Scientist
Vocaloid tackles this problem by breaking the human voice into 2500 phonemes, or syllables.
Vocaloid captures the singer's unique tone and pronunciation of the transitions and converts them to a mathematical form that it stores in a database.
When Vocaloid is fed the electronic score of a song, it pulls the relevant transitions from its database and stitches them together to produce the sound.

I first heard about Vocaloid singing synthesizer technology only days prior to the NAB show a year and a half ago, where I was delivering a panel talk on new audio software and techniques for radio production.
Vocaloid from Zero-G Ltd. and Yamaha is software that creates up to 16 tracks of virtual singers, with total control over nuances such as volume, vibrato (the subtle pitch warble in actual singing voices), brightness, pitch bend and gender.
Render and export the completed Vocaloid project as a WAV file, which may then be opened up in a multitrack editor and mixed with the existing music bed.

 Vocaloid
VOCALOID is a vocal-synthesizing software that enables song writers to generate authentic-sounding singing on their PCs by simply typing in the lyrics and music notes of their compositions.
The software synthesizes the sound from "vocal libraries" of recordings of actual singers, retaining the vocal qualities of the original singing voices to reproduce realistic vocals.
VOCALOID software is on sale bundled with VOCALOID libraries from soundware companies under licence from Yamaha.

 Popular Science | Yamaha Vocaloid
Synthetic vocals have never even come close to fooling the ear, and outside of certain Kraftwerk chestnuts, robo-crooning is offputting.
But that has changed with Yamaha's Vocaloid voice synthesis software, which does an uncanny job of mimicking the human voice by using a library of every phoneme (component sound) in the English language in every possible emphasis pattern (e.g., the "eh" sound of both "pen" and "leg" along with every other way it's spoken).
With this software, producers will be able to program a tune, type in the lyrics, and then hear eerily realistic synthesized "singing"--just like the latest Britney Spears CD, but with less midriff.
