		VODNJAN / DIGNANO is a little town situated in the south-west of Istria 11,7 kilometres from Pula, at an elevation of 135 metres.
		VODNJAN / DIGNANO was known as early as Roman times as as VICUS ATTINIANUM and listed in historical records in 932 at the time of Pietro Candiniano, to whom the Istrian towns were giving amphorae of ''good wine'' in exchange of protection.
		The streets of VODNJAN / DIGNANO still strongly evoke the past: from the Gothic palace of the Bettica counts and faces engraved in the stone facades, to decorations made of wrought iron on the wells and the wooden engraved doors of important palaces and the elegant Church of St. Mary of Carmel (built in 1630).

	Vodnjan and the olive oil
		Vodnjan: One of the most picturesque Medieval towns, located near Pula.
		The patron saint of Vodnjan is St. Blaž, and the chapel built in his honor is famous for having one of the most valuable displays of sacral art in Istria.
		The quality of the oil is the result of a long tradition in virgin olive oil production which you can best witness by sampling the olive oil in the so called olive oil roads.

		The existing section consists in 90 km of semi-motorway between Matulji (5 km north from Opatija) and Vodnjan (10 km north of Pula).
		On the sections Matulji – Vodnjan and Medaki-Kanfanar there are 14 viaducts which vary in length from 100 to 500 m, in addition there are 11 crossroads and 83 km of safety fences, as well as emergency lay-bys at 2.5 km intervals.

	Istroromanian language
		The mixture of those tongues with later additions of Slavic and other elements created the interesting structure and vocabulary of different varieties of Istroromanian language.
		Among them, we can mention Istriot dialect, was used to be spoken in Croatia, in the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula, now only in towns of Rovinj (Rovigno) and Vodnjan (Dignano), by less than 1.000 speakers.
		The relationship of Istriot with other romance languages of the area (Italian and Friulian) is not still clear.
