Treating Voice Pitch Disorders at UCSD's Voice Disorder Clinic
To lower the pitch of the voice, a procedure called a thyroplasty can be performed in which a small vertical strip of cartilage is removed from one or both sides of the thyroid cartilage in the neck.
This procedure is conducted under local anesthesia and the patient is asked to phonate during the operation to ensure that the desired pitch is obtained.
Because the procedure is not reversible, it sometimes takes two (and sometimes three) rounds of treatment to achieve the desired rise in pitch.

 NYU Voice Center - Laryngoplasty
This procedure is done through a small incision in the neck while the patient is sedated in the operating room.
While this procedure is technically easier, the surgeon does not have the ability to “fine-tune” the voice, as the patient cannot respond to commands during the procedure.
Arytenoid adduction is a separate procedure that is often combined with a medialization laryngoplasty, and is most useful in patients with paralyzed vocal cords.

Voice-actuated, speaker-dependent control system for hospital bed - Patent 5335313
All of the patient's voice data is saved to floppy diskette, so that if a patient is moved to another bed, the diskette is simply inserted to the computer corresponding to the new bed, thus eliminating the need for re-training the new operator system to the patient's voice patterns.
The voice commands given by the patient are transmitted through a microphone 26 which the patient wears on his or her head.
The voice card 12 is preferably part of a commercially available voice system which includes voice recognition software for learning and continually updating a patient's voice patterns and which translates sound frequencies into digital form which is then recognizable by the operating system of the computer 10 as a keystroke command.

Voice therapy is often a first treatment option, especially if the cause of the condition is unknown.
In this surgical procedure, your doctor moves a "window" of cartilage from the outside of your voice box inward, pushing the paralyzed vocal cord toward the middle of your voice box.
This condition may require a surgical procedure called a tracheotomy, in which an incision is made in the front of your neck and a breathing tube is inserted through a hole (stoma) into the windpipe (trachea).

The procedure is done awake so that the surgeon will know exactly what size and where to place the implant using the patient's voice as vocal feedback.
This part of the procedure is more demanding, although it has the same complications as the thyroplasty procedure, including the possibility of perforating the mucosa of the larynx area.
The purpose of this procedure is to maintain the proper health of the vocal fold muscle despite the nerve injury.

They found this produces a more natural voice and does not require the patient to cover his stoma when speaking, however, it requires an adhesive attachment to the peritracheal skin and maintenance is more complicated.
