VoiceXML - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VoiceXML (VXML) is the W3C's standard XML format for specifying interactive voice dialogues between a human and a computer.
But the VoiceXML 2.0 standard, adopted as a W3C Recommendation 16 March 2004, clarifies most areas of difference, and vendors are going through a rigorous conformance testing process set up by the VoiceXML Forum, the industry group promoting the use of the standard.
VoiceXML 2.1 is currently a candidate recommendation with only small a set of additional features, designed to be fully backward compatible with the actual 2.0 version.

VoiceXML's main goal is to bring the full power of Web development and content delivery to voice response applications, and to free the authors of such applications from low-level programming and resource management.
While VoiceXML strives to accommodate the requirements of a majority of voice response services, services with stringent requirements may best be served by dedicated applications that employ a finer level of control.
