Voivod - Biography - AOL Music
Voivod (singer Denis "Snake" Belanger, guitarist Denis "Piggy" d'Amour, drummer Michel "Away" Langevin, and bassist Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault) was one of the first thrash bands out of Canada to gain popularity outside of their home country.
Voivod opened the way for other Canadian thrash bands and for metal bands with their unique styles of performing and writing.
But just as it appeared as though Voivod may be able to break through to a wider audience, Theriault left the group right after the release of 1991's Angel Rat as the album quickly sunk from sight while the rest of the rock world focused their attention on the burgeoning alt-rock/Seattle movement.

 Voivod
Voivod is possibly the most creative band to master the metal form.
Voivod began by cranking out Venom, Motorhead, Tank and Judas Priest covers in 1982, but it didn't take long for their muse to take hold, as original songs like "Condemned To The Gallows," "Voivod," "Warriors Of Ice" and "Blower" came to life shortly thereafter.
Voivod's cosmic drama played out in the new decade with two albums that, while not unanimously acclaimed upon release, have become legendary among their fan base.

Voivod - Satan Stole My Teddybear
It's not my favorite Voivod album, nor is it their most innovative, but the band would never again sound this rough and aggressive, and that alone makes it worth checking out for fans of raw thrash metal.
Early on in Voivod's career, the various members all solemnly stated that if one member of the original lineup were to leave, Voivod would have to come to a halt as it was supposedly their composite chemistry that made the band what it was.
The fact that Voivod is still releasing material, albeit mostly live archives from 1996, is a testament to the perseverence of the band.

Phobos finds Voivod returning to their roots with a 13 tracks of hard edged razor sharp metal mixed with some ace programming layered over industrial rhythms with vocals that are best described as a chainsaw cutting through cold steel.
Voivod even cover King Crimson's '21st Century Schizoid Man', now covers work or they don't, but because of the overall feel to the album, this works big time and is a fitting way to end the album.
Die-hard Voivod fans will probably already own Phobos by now, but if your one of those people who have never marvelled at Voivod's creative talents then Phobos is as good a place to start and while your at it, why not add the already mentioned 'Angel Rat' to your collection.

I was lucky enough to catch Voivod on their headlining tour for "Nothingface" that included the openers Soundgarden and Faith No More, two bands that reached a commercial plateau and, in the process, left their hosts behind.
The mixing he does with the living components of Voivod, in addition to the guitar tracks left behind by Piggy, breathes life into "Katorz" in such a striking manner you're deceived into thinking there's a possibility Voivod might tour this year.
"Voivod" is written and performed by a band that's found a new excitement about their music and that excitement carries over to the listener.

But hey, this is Voivod we're discussing here and they always were on a different plane to the mainstream, commerialised stuff that we're being continually bombarded with these days on Satellite TV.

With vocalist Denis "Snake" Belanger returning to the fold, three quarters of the original band is reunited with a unified purpose.
Voivod has always been among the most intelligent bands in any genre of music; they have evolved into an entity that gives up nothing when it comes to pure rock mania, yet offer something more as well: thoughtful songs that provocatively and critically examine the world we live in.
This is among the finest records of their storied career, and will be one of the hard rock and metal records (or any sub-genre thereof) to beat in 2003.

Ground and Sky review - Voivod - Nothingface
Voivod are quirky, catchy, tight, and impossibly original: a sci-fi prog-metal hybrid.
Here, with a suddenly neutered identity, the Voivod began to combine its concepts of physical science, philosophy, politics and the ultimate impact of these elements on the self.
I have to admit, though, that listening to it in 2001 isn't as enthralling as it was in 1989.

Sad how people are finally ‘getting’ Voivod nearly two decades after they started to ravage the underground.
As sad as Piggy’s death was and still is, it brought some much-needed attention to a band who’s been outsmarting the competition for years.
The fact of the matter is that Voivod has always been the thinking man’s metal band, and you guessed it — that consists of yours truly and the thousands of other Voivod-minions dreaming of outer space and beyond.

With this, their 13th full-length album, Voivod have welcomed back their original vocalist, Denis Belanger, brought on board a new member--none other than Metallica's Jason Newsted--and are clearly enjoying a fresh lease of life.
From the fast-paced opener "Gasmask Revival" (the first Voivod song I ever heard), all the way through the final repetition of the title line of "We Carry On," VOIVOD is an awesome rollercoaster of jagged, thrashy metal.
VOIVOD's thirteen awesome tracks span more than an hour long, and like many albums, is one of the kinds that you can't just skip around on it; every track is so good in itself, it is to be treated like a concept album and listened to in one sitting.
