Voivod (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Voivod is a Canadian thrash metal band formed in 1982, and reportedly the first to describe themselves as cyberpunk.
Voivod reached the peak of their popularity with the 1989 release Nothingface which featured a cover version of Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine (from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn).
The band recorded three albums as a trio in the late 1990s with new member Eric Forrest handling both vocals and bass guitar.

For the band who keeps fans on the edge of their seats, the band who consistently delivers, 2003 will be a landmark year.
Voivod began by cranking out Venom, Motorhead, Tank and Judas Priest covers in 1982, but it didn't take long for their muse to take hold, as original songs like "Condemned To The Gallows," "Voivod," "Warriors Of Ice" and "Blower" came to life shortly thereafter.
Voivod's cosmic drama played out in the new decade with two albums that, while not unanimously acclaimed upon release, have become legendary among their fan base.

metallica - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
Inspired by bands such as Motrhead, Diamond Head and Saxon, the so-called New Wave of British Heavy Metal, as well as hardcore punk like the Misfits and Discharge, Metallica were single-minded in their desire to break the grip of soft metal on heavy metal fans.
The band's breakneck metal tempos and layered guitar compositions had largely been replaced by bluesy rock songs, full of bent notes, warm guitar tone, slide guitar, and shuffle and swing rhythms.
The band members - who had recently cut their hair - were depicted wearing pimp suits, smoking cigars, and sipping brandy, sometimes wearing heavy makeup.

Voivod: self-titled - PopMatters Music Review
Voivod should have been far more popular than they were in the '80s.
Voivod were now trying to sound more mainstream, closer to bands like Rush and Pink Floyd, but the album just didn't work very well, and the masses didn't care on way or another.
Voivod went on to perform as a trio for the rest of the '90s, while trying to return to their thrash metal roots, but it looked more than obvious that their best days were behind them.

Voivod are simply one of the most unique, recognizable and underrated bands in music history.
As with past Voivod releases the music is complex and technical with many tempo variations, time signature shifts, dizzying drum work etc. Newsted also proves he was really held back in Metallica with some fine bass playing that, while not out front in the mix, is easily heard and adds depth to the songs.

Although it's usual for the idea of a band to come first, then create the conceptual theme, Voivod is probably the only band that revolves around a concept character that would reflect the speculative, bizarre and innovative metaphysical/scientific-fact and fiction philosophies of the band members.
For some odd reason, 'Voivod' was labelled as 'fascists/nazis' because they talked about war and weapons, it seems like this unjust accusation stemmed from the rantings of a simple mind that can't grasp the art of commentary and analysis for which there's no clear position.
On this record, the band's intro consisted of a "far away" then close-up "death jungle beat" (on the 1st lp, it was "rustling chains and ghostly guitar").

Voivod started out as a hard-rockin' punk/metal/hardcore band, with a weirdo drummer named Away who fantasized about a nuclear vampire named the voivod, and a singer whose name gave us more information than we needed about his anatomy.
As Voivod's main goal was to be different than other bands, with each following release, they incorporated odd time signatures, key and tempo changes and futuristic lyrics in their songs.
Although Voivod have a series of great albums that boast different approaches and succeed in conflicting manners, "Nothingface" is both the best and most accessible album they've released to date.
