Voivode Dmytro was appointed military commander of Kiev by Prince Danylo of Galicia in 1239, charged with defending the city from the Mongols.
Following a protracted siege, the city's walls were breached and fighting commenced within the city.
After Kiev fell on December 6, 1240, Voivode Dmytro was spared by the Mongol leader Batu Khan for the courage he showed in the defense of the city.

Buchach belonged to Lithuanian magnates of the Abdank coat of arms of became famous for defending Galician Rus and Podillya from the Crimean Tatars.
Mikhailo Buchatsky was a Galician leader, Ivan was a Podilyan voivode and Yakiv (the last of this kin) was Kamyanetsky, Kholmsky and Plotsky bishop.
In 1913 1914 a writer Dmytro Bedzyk studied in the trade- building school which was at the monastery.

The founders of the monastery were voivode of Nowogrodek Aleksander Chodkiewicz, the owner of Grodek and Zabludow as well as archbishop of Smolensk Jozef Soltan (later the metropolitan of Kijev).
The father of congregation's founder - Iwan Chodkiewicz was a Kijev voivode.
Dmytro Stepovyk recalled it in his address during the first Presynodal Symposium, Christianity and Culture in Europe.

He failed in several attempts to gain control of Halych, but finally succeeded in 1238, with the support of the burghers.
