Java is almost entirely of volcanic origin, and contains no less than thirty-eight mountains of that conical form which indicates their having at one time or other been active volcanoes.
Another of the volcanoes of Java, called Galunggung, burst into eruption in 1822, commencing with a terrible explosion of stones and ashes, followed by a stream of hot mud, which overspread a large tract of ground.
The water mixed with the mud is salt, and the salt is separated from it by evaporation for economical purposes.

In 1989 the Voyager 2 spacecraft observed ice volcanoes (cryovolcanism) on Triton, a moon of Neptune and in 2005 the Cassini-Huygens probe photographed fountains of frozen particles erupting from Saturn's moon Enceladus.

Narcondum volcano, an island possession of India in the Andaman Sea, is part of a volcanic arc that continues northward from Sumatra to Burma (Myanmar).
These are not real volcanoes in the usual sense, but because they may build a small, low-profile cone of local extent around the hole through which the mud is thrown out, they are known as mud volcanoes (figure 3).

Anyone who visits Java cannot fail to be impressed by the string of volcanoes which dominate the skyline of much of the island.
Java's second highest mountain is best viewed from the hill station of Baturaden which is just north of Purwokerto.
