In 1985 Weidler also made his debut in sports car racing, in a Joest Porsche 956 with Marc Duez and 'John Winter' at the World Championship round at Spa, finishing 6th.
In 1986, Weidler had further WSC outings, coming 10th at the Nurburgring with Greek driver Costas Los in a Cosmic Racing March 84G Porsche, and then sharing a Kremer Racing Porsche 962 C with Bruno Giacomelli to 12th at Spa and 4th at Fuji, for 39th place overall with 14 points.
But Volker was then forced into an early retirement from racing due to suffering from tinitus just as his career was taking off again.

Brunner left early in the year to join Zakspeed but de Cesaris was able to finish fourth in Detroit, which gave the team ninth in the Constructors' Championship.
The original car was reworked that winter by Bob Bell and Stefan Fober and the team expanded to two cars, but neither Christian Danner nor Volker Weidler could do much with the car.
Weidler kept trying to qualify until August when he was replaced by Pierre-Henri Raphanel but he did no better, while Danner was fired after the Portuguese GP and the car was tried by Gregor Foitek in Spain and by Bertrand Gachot in Japan and Australia.

 Volker Weidler - Biography
Volker also went to the prestigious end-of-year F3 race at Macau, where he drove a Ralt RT30 Volkswagen, but it was a disappointing experience, Weidler only managing 7th place.
Weidler was chosen with Jean Alesi to compete in F3000 in 1988, while Eddie Irvine and JJ Lehto were chosen for F3, and Mika Hakkinen and Allan McNish were chosen for the Vauxhall Lotus Challenge.
This unjustly rescued Weidler out of pre-qualifying, and for the second half of the year he was an automatic starter in the qualifying draw.

Volker Weidler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Volker Weidler (born March 18, 1962 in Heidelberg) is a former racing driver from Germany, best known for winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991.
In the 1989 Formula One season, Weidler entered 10 Formula One Grands Prix racing for the Rial team, but failed to qualify the uncompetitive car on every occasion.
From 1992, however, rotary engines were banned by the FISA, rendering the 787 ineligible after its maiden win.

 8W - Who? - Volker Weidler
While Danner's entry was exempt from prequalifying due to De Cesaris's good showings in the latter half of 1988, Weidler was thrown in the deep end.
With no F1 experience whatsoever Volker was forced to do the impossible: make the ARC2 work in just 30 minutes.
In Hungary he managed to prequalify again, only to finish up last on Saturday and to hear he was to be replaced by Pierre-Henri Raphanel.

Foitek fell out with EuroBrun and was replaced by Oscar Larrauri and at Onyx Gachot talked faster than he drove and that gave the team the excuse to dump him in favor of JJ Lehto.

This, for a long time didn't sit well with other Japanese manufacturers, as Mazda, to this day, is the only Japanese manufacturer to win the historic race.
