Romanticism, in reaction against the rationalism of the 18th century, it was a movement in philosophy and the arts, and a set of attitudes, in the latter part of the 18th c., initiated in Germany and England; it glorified feeling, emotion, sentimentality and the special characteristics of the historic past.
To Volkish thinkers, the Enlightenment and parliamentary democracy were foreign ideas that corrupted the pure German spirit; they denounced the liberal-humanist tradition of the West as alien to German soul.
Volkish thinkers were especially attracted to racist doctrines, and extreme nationalism was combined with racism -belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others; discrimination or prejudice based on race.

With fanatical devotion, Volkish thinkers embraced all things German—the medieval past, the German landscape, the simple peasant, the village— and denounced the humanist tradition as alien to the German soul.
Volkish thinkers claimed that the ‘German race’ was purer than, and therefore superior to, all other races.
Volkish thinkers regarded Jews as the antithesis of Germans and everything German; thus, just as Germans embodied everything good, Jews were depicted as embodying everything evil, wicked and depraved.

How was Volkish ideology employed in the Nazi Party's rise to power?
There are extensive and varied citations throughout the book (of mainly primary sources), and the subject matter proceeds logically from the birth of Volkish thought at the end of the Romantic Era to how the Nazis actually implemented the beliefs in the Third Reich.
Furthermore, having grown up in Germany (especially as a liberal) during the rise of National Socialism gives him a unique perspective on the mood and beliefs of the nation which could not have been fully acquired except through firsthand experience.
The chapters about ideology are in a narrative style that is easy to read and is an extremely good introduction to the concept of Volkish ideology, but it fails to deliver the depth needed for a topic this narrow.

The Ideology of Death: The Aryan Myth
From lies, to science, from euthanasia, to genocide, the pseudoscientific “discoveries” of the Enlightenment, the reverence of the past started by the Renaissance, and the idealistic views of the Romantic age led to theories on race that were as baseless as they were deadly.
Youth was also a major aspect of Volkish thought, as seen in the Volkish reverence for history: “The oldness of the world is in our time and not in that wherein the Ancients lived, for that was its youth” (Francis Bacon, qtd in Poliakov 102).
The history of Germany was glorified by Volkish thinkers to an extent that it fomented modern-day rationalizations of racial superiority.

Volkish ideology was spread by the German educational system, youth groups, and university fraternaties, and proved to be an insidious ideological undercurrent among disaffected segments of German society even before World War I. Hitler and the Nazis were to capitalize on this discontent in the 1920s.
Volkish ideology was not the program of a particular party or movement, but an outlook that encompassed many interpretations and versions.
In the end, Hitler's Volkish Ideology was to be fashioned around anti-Semitism, territorial expansionism, and a Social Darwinist view of history.

Volkish thought, a clear example of mythical thinking, was an ominous expression of that romantic German nationalism that etherealized everything German and denounced as alien to the German soul everything non-German, particularly the liberal-humanist Enlightenment tradition which was identified with France and the West.
Volkish thought attracted Germans frightened by all the complexities of the modern age--industrialization, urbanization, materialism, party politics, and class conflicts.

The process by which "traditional" anti-semitic thinking and Volkish "idealism" became entwined with race science and spread through German culture prior to the National Socialist period is examined in ensuing chapters.
In this minimal discussion of the critical foundations of Volkish thought, inaccurate historical descriptions and misrepresentations appear, setting the precedent for what will become a pattern—nearly a style—of confusing and misleading ideas, which will be of central importance to the validity of this study.
The position cited earlier of the seminal Volkish ideologue Johannes Gottlieb Fichte, that "that truth is what you wish," is foundational to relativizing approaches in historical scholarship that have appeared in the past twenty years.

Alan Baker’s ‘Invisible Eagle’ looks at the background to the German volkish nationalist groups, steeped in neo-paganism, anti-Semitism and an anti-materialism that finds strange echoes in some Green end ecological groups today.
Volkish nationalism was an essential component of a semi-fascist sub-culture that gravitated naturally toward National Socialism.
It is clear, however, that Baker is not a historian, neither is he an expert in the study of fascism.

There is no doubt that history was the fertile soil, which nourished the genocide sown by the Nazis and those who collaborated with them.
By way of the Aryan myth and the racial eugenicists, the essential ideological framework was in place to rid the world of the "enemy" and prepare for the triumph of the "superior race." The dynamics was set for the Final Solution.
Auschwitz radically symbolized this aspiration for volkish nationalism: the Final Solution was the apogée of total ethnic separatism; and the in-gathering of Volks-Deutsche from Eastern Europe illustrated the principle of ethnic-inspired population re-unification.

An impressive number of the most influential Volkish writers, propagandists, and spokesmen were influenced by or involved in some way with either Haeckel or his Monist followers.
In the development of racism, racial eugenics, Germanic Christianity, nature worship, and anti-Semitism, Haeckel and the Monists were an important source and a major inspiration for many of the diverse streams of thought which came together later on under the banner of National Socialism.
Naturally, this is not to deny the influence on Hitler of many other writers and Volkish intellectuals, for it is apparent, that Hitler's views were far too heterogeneous a compilation to be limited to a single source.

Guido von List was an important figure among occultists and Pan Germanic nationalists who borrowed from the Theosophy of Madame H. Blavatsky as well as ancient Aryan (Teutonic and Indian) legend to create a unique system of rune magic.
Subsequently, many indidividuals associated with National Socialism and the NSDAP were to examine List's ideas and writings and find them interesting in furthering their own agenda.
Hopefully, further materials of List's will be made available in English one day; however, currently this remains one of the few available items for those interested in studying this individual, Volkish prophet and Ariosophist in the late Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries.

The book examines many sources, mostly idealistic and utopian in nature, from philosophers and writers, as well as a great deal of the science fiction and fantasy type novels that proliferated during the rise of the Third Reich.
This book shows how those within the Volkish movement beginning in the Nineteenth century and culminating after the defeat in the First World War, calling for a Third Reich, were naïve dreamers and utopians, whose viewpoints were ruthlessly exploited by the opportunists within the upper echelons of the NSDAP proper, and Hitler himself.
The book also traces out the background of Hitler and shows precisely which aspects of Volkish ideology and utopian theorizing were to play an influence on him as he grew in power after commandeering the reigns of the NSDAP.

The first section focuses on the roots of Volkish thought and how they progressed from Romanticism in the late nineteenth century to Volkish in the early twentieth century which in turn lead to the Nazi ideals presented by Hitler to the German masses in the 1930s, a perversion of the Volkish.
His second section examines how Volkish spread from small groups of idealists into the University system through literature and art, and through this infiltration of the Universities, as well as the German Youth Movement, expose its philosophies to a wider German audience than it had enjoyed before the first world war.
The final section addresses Hitler's rise to power and the ways in which Hitler was able to manipulate Volkish and its intrinsic anti-Semitism to a radical degree to serve his purposes.

National Socialists portrayed Germany as a nation that had been betrayed or stabbed in the back by socialists and Jews; they portrayed Weimar Germany as a moral-political swamp; they seized on the Bolshevik-Marxist danger, painted it in lurid colors, and stoked people’s fear in order to pose as saviors of the nation.
