The rebuilding of Germany's football stadia ahead of the 2006 World Cup finals continues apace, with the official opening of Hamburg's Volksparkstadion last weekend marked by the country's 2-0 victory over Greece.
Though fairly rudimentary (uncomfortable bucket seats with views of the pitch obscured by crash barriers), the process works sufficiently to keep Uefa happy while maintaining the fan's desire to stand.
Dirk Mansun, secretary of the Hamburger SV Supporters Club, explains that, working alongside both the club and its' fans, the architects developed a system whereby the terrace steps rotate through 180 degrees to be replaced by steps with seats.

The newspaper reported that it had obtained a copy of a letter from FIFA general secretary Urs Linsi to Germany’s tournament organising committee demanding Hamburg drop the name AOL from the stadium’s title or risk losing the right to hold matches during next year's World Cup.
The rebuilt stadium, traditionally known as the Volksparkstadion, has been known as the AOL Arena for the last five years.
Holland famously beat West Germany 2-1 at the Volksparkstadion with a last-minute Marco van Basten goal in the semi-finals of Euro '88.

 The AOL Arena
Originally built as the Volksparkstadion (People's Park Stadium) in 1953, the ground was completely rebuilt in 1999 as the impressive modern arena that you see in these pictures.
In 2001, AOL paid a reported 30m DM (around 15.3m euros) for a five-year ground naming deal that saw the stadium rechristened the AOL Arena (although many locals still call it the Volksparkstadion).
However, FIFA have ruled that sponsored stadium names are not allowed for the World Cup (except in Stuttgart - don't ask why!!), and have rebranded it for 2006 the 'FIFA World Cup Stadium, Hamburg'.

There is the refurbished Volksparkstadion, and bands such as Oasis and R.E.M have stepped foot on the stage of the Trabrennbahn Bahrenfeld.
When you think of sport here in Hamburg, you think of Hamburgs famous football team first - HSV - who are once again at the top of the league.
The other celebrated football team in the city is the St. Pauli FC which plays its games in Wilhelm Koch Stadion on the Millerntor.
