Luigi Dallapiccola - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canti di prigionia and Il prigionero are reflections of this impassioned concern; the former was his first true protest work.
During World War II he was in the dangerous position of opposing the Nazis; though he tried to go about his career as usual, and did, to a limited extent, on two occasions he was forced to go into hiding for several months.
He had no more finished compositions after 1972 due to his failing health, until he died in Florence in 1975 of edema of the lungs; however, there are a very few sketches and fragments of work from this time, including a vocal work left unfinished just hours before he passed on.

With his transcription of Ritorno di Ulisse in patria Dallapiccola approached the myth of Ulysses for the first time: his aim was to adapt the Ulysses by Monteverdi to contemporary music theatre, there is no musicological intention behind the edition.
In a climate of general confusion and instability the opera Volo di notte was staged.
When he came back he composed the Concerto per la Notte di Natale dell'anno 1956 on commission from the Rameau Chamber Music in Tokyo, and set to work, a year after his mother's death, on Requiescant, which, in a private dedication to Laura and Annalibera, he defined as "the composition dearest to me".

His triptych Canti di prigionia (1938-41; Songs of Prison) marked him as a mature composer; this work, for chorus with an orchestra of percussion, harps, and pianos, was a protest against Fascist doctrine and was based in part on the chant "Dies Irae" ("Day of Wrath") from the mass for the dead.
The rhythmic intricacies of the Quaderno musicale di Annalibera (1952; Musical Notebook of Annalibera), a piano book written for his daughter, serve as the basis for much of his Canti di liberazione (1955; Songs of Liberation), a triptych for chorus and orchestra, celebrating the liberation of Italy from Fascist control.
An opera, Volo di notte (Night Flight), was first performed in Florence in 1940.

In Germany and later in Italy he met politically inspired opposition, although his opera Volo di notte (Night Flight), based on Saint-Exupéry’s Vol de nuit, had performances in both countries.
He was among the first Italian composers to absorb the principles of Schoenberg and to make continuing use of the latter’s serial techniques.
Dallapiccola’s Variazioni for orchestra of 1954 is an orchestral version of the Quaderno musicale di Annalibera for piano of 1952, a work reflecting a refinement of the composer’s applications of serialism.

Only in music could I express my indignation." Earlier that year Dallapiccola had married a Jewish woman, and the couple were forced to seek refuge in the hills surrounding Florence.
The Canti di Prigionia (scored for chorus with an instrumental ensemble consisting of two harps, two pianos and percussion) sets texts by three condemned prisoners: Mary Stuart, Boethius and Savonarola.
Mary Stuart's fervent prayer for freedom struck a particularly strong chord: "I wanted," Dallapiccola said, "the divine word libera to be shouted by everyone." Some five years later, when his only child was born shortly after the libera tion of Florence from the Nazi occupation in August 1944, she was named Annalibera.

 Dallapiccola, Preghiere
It was only with two composers of the two generations preceding Dallapiccola’s–Giuseppe Martucci (born 1856) and Ottorino Respighi (born 1879)–that Italy began for the first time since the baroque period to take a strong interest in, and make a strong contribution, to purely orchestral music.
Dallapiccola’s output ranges from such impressive stage works as Volo di notte (Night Flight, after Saint-Exupéry), Il prigioniero, Job, and Ulisse to a highly accomplished series of purely orchestral and instrumental pieces.
But it is probably in the choral music, including the compelling Canti di prigionia, and in more than a dozen works for solo voice with orchestra or instrumental ensemble that his most characteristic and at the same time most recognizably Italian voice can be heard.

Rivière, when Luigi Dallapiccola wrote Volo di Notte, his operatic version of Night Flight, would have seemed a sympathetic character in Italy at the end of the 1930s.
Only after the second world war and the defeat of Italian fascism would he have come to seem like an irresponsible fanatic.
