Volodymyr the Great (Valdamar, Volodimer, Vladimir), b ca 956, d 15 July 1015 in Vyshhorod, near Kyiv.
Volodymyr, his family, and his closest associates were baptized in December 987, when he took the Christian name Vasylii (Basil).
Volodymyr received papal emissaries in 986, 988, 991, 992, and 1000 and sent his own envoys to Rome in 993 and 1001.

His name is known in three traditions: in Old East Slavic and modern Ukrainian as Volodymyr ( Володимир), in Old Church Slavonic and modern Russian as Vladimir ( Владимир), and in the Norse and modern Scandinavian languages as Valdemar (German variant "Waldemar").
Vladimir was the youngest son of Svyatoslav I by his slave girl Malusha, described in the Norse sagas as a prophetess who lived to the age of 100 and was brought from her cave to the palace to predict the future.
Of the Muslim Bulgarians of the Volga the envoys reported there is no gladness among them; only sorrow and a great stench; their religion is not a good one, as they don't drink wine and eat pork.

The Coat of Arms of Ukraine features the same colors found on the Ukrainian flag : a blue shield with yellow trident —the symbol of ancient tribes that once lived in Ukraine, later adopted by Ruthenian rulers.

Born in 948, Prince Volodymyr Sviatoslavych was the youngest of the three sons of Kyivan Prince Sviatoslav Ihorevych the Brave and the youngest grandson of Kyivan Princess Olha the Wise.
Volodymyr in fact had begun to consolidate the Kyivan state in 981, when he quelled an uprising of the Viatichians and imposed the “plowman’s tribute” on them.
Volodymyr and a small detachment of warriors engaged them in battle, and failing to rout them, he was forced to retreat.

"Volodymyr the Great" change coin of 1 Hryvnia denomination is dedicated to the great Kyiv prince and public figure during whose reign the formation of the ancient-Rus state was accomplished and the Christianity as a state religion was introduced.

 My family and relatives (Zakhariy, Kukharski, Gawdyda, Melnychuk) from Berezhany, Trostyanets, Pidvysoke, Kyiv, ...
My younger brother has very Ukrainian name Taras (like great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, whose portrait or statue is almost at every Ukrainian house, including ours in Berezhany and Pidvysoke) and he is 11 years younger me. He was born on 27 th of August, 1986 and still attends school in Berezhany.
Thus my great grandfather and his ancestors (known to me from the end of 18 th century and are present the geneological tree below) were Austrian citizens and are burried at the village cemetery near the church in Trostyanets'.
Volodymyr is in his 70 s now and has 4 daughters: the oldest Halyna, who married to Bohdan Mostriansky (Bohdan Mostriansky's two brothers Yevhen (or Gene) and Stepan eemigrated to the US, Syracuse, NY a few years ago) from Mechyshchiv, Nadiya, Lusia and Vira.
