Voltage regulator -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A voltage regulator is an (A device that produces or is powered by electricity) electrical device designed to automatically maintain a constant (The rate at which energy is drawn from a source that produces a flow of electricity in a circuit; expressed in volts) voltage level.
In fixed voltage regulators the reference pin is tied to ((art) the surface (as a wall or canvas) prepared to take the paint for a painting) ground, whereas in variable regulators the reference pin is connected to the centre point of a fixed or variable voltage divider fed by the regulator's output.
A variable voltage divider (such as a (A resistor with three terminals, the third being an adjustable center terminal; used to adjust voltages in radios and TV sets) potentiometer) allows the user to adjust the regulated voltage.

The 14.4 output voltage is a momentary deviation, or variation, from the required regulated output voltage of 14.3 and is the result of a rise in the input voltage to 20.1 volts.
With a base-emitter voltage of 0.7 volt, the output voltage is equal to the sum of the voltages across CR1 and the voltage at the base-emitter junction of Q1.
Since the output voltage is composed of the Zener voltage and the base-emitter voltage, the output voltage momentarily increases to 6.4 volts.

Articles - Voltage regulator   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Early automobile generators and alternators had a mechanical voltage regulator using two or three relays and various resistors to stabilize the generator's output at slightly more than 6 or 12 V, independent of the engine's rpm or the varying load on the vehicle's electrical system.
A voltage stabiliser is a type of household mains regulator which uses a continuously variable auto-transformer to maintain an AC output that is as close to the standard or normal mains voltage as possible, under conditions of fluctuation.
That is followed by a linear regulator that generates exactly the desired voltage and eliminates nearly all the noise generated by the switching regulator.

The input voltage will need to be about 5.5 volts greater than the output at full load and heat dissipation at full load would be about 23 watts, so a fairly large heat sink may be needed for both the regulator and pass transistor.
For good efficiency the voltage at the collectors of the two parallel 2N3055 pass transistors should be close to the output voltage.
The output voltage is set with the voltage divider (1K/560) so that 1.7 volts is applied to the 3904 base when the output is 5 volts.

As the regulator, LM317 is used for the positive voltage and LM337 is used for the negative voltage.
The regulator becomes hot when outputting the 1 A electric current and when there is not a heatsink, the regulator breaks.
The merit of the regulator of this type is what little noise occurs and is cheap and there are few use parts.

Electrical System: Voltage Regulator   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Description: The voltage regulator is an electronic device that regulates alternator output according to the battery’s state of charge and accessory loads.
Today’s compact electronic voltage regulators may be housed inside the alternator or the voltage regulator function may be handled by the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM).
Symptoms of a faulty voltage regulator may include a discharged battery, short battery life, poor accessory and lighting operation, frequent bulb replacement, lower than normal dashboard voltmeter readings, an illuminated charging system warning light, frequent topping off of the battery’s electrolyte, and diagnostic trouble codes stored in the vehicle’s PCM.

 Finesse Voltage Regulator Noise!
Many voltage regulators have excessive levels of output noise including voltage spikes from switching circuits and high flicker noise levels from unfiltered references.
The regulator's noise voltage appears across this resistor so the noise current is shunted to ground through the transistor's collector.
The regulator's noise is 330 nV per root-hertz at 100 hertz and the circuit reduces this noise to 20 nV.

This "overhead" must be exceeded before the regulator outputs any current, and it is usually quite close to the regulator's minimum drop-out voltage.
If you subtract the overhead of 1.5 volts from the the point where it begins regulation, this is a good indication of the voltage output of the regulator.
This is a good thing, voltage regulators are not usually stable without a microfarad or two on input and output.

 Bosch Charging systems
The voltage regulator senses the battery voltage in a rather indirect manner through the diode board and uses this information to control the current to the field winding of the alternator.
If the battery voltage is too high, the voltage regulator reduces the field current which decreases the strength of its magnetic field and the output of the alternator.
The voltage drop across these diodes is roughly equal to the drop across the larger diodes and causes the voltage they provide to the voltage regulator to roughly equal the voltage at the battery.

The 15 amp AR-1215 AC Line Voltage Regulator is intended to protect audio, video, computer and other electronic equipment from problems caused by AC line voltage irregularities-sags, brownouts, or overvoltages that can cause sensitive digital equipment to malfunction, or, in extreme cases, to sustain damage.
Voltages beyond that range may also be converted to usable levels, depending on how far out of range they are.

What is voltage regulator? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The voltage regulator's job is to reduce the 5 volt signal to the lower voltage required by the microprocessor.
Pentium microprocessors with MMX actually require two voltage regulators -- one for the internal (core) voltage, and one for the I/O drivers at 3.3 volts.
Some voltage regulators, particularly those packaged as a voltage regulator module (VRM), are voltage ID (VID) programmable, which means that the microprocessor can program the voltage regulator to provide the correct voltage during power-up.

Regulated charge pumps do this job, but they are uncommon, and they often command a premium price.
To cancel the voltage drop that charge-pump output impedance causes, the circuit feeds the 5V output back to the low-dropout regulator, which alters its output to maintain output regulation.
Furthermore, because the low-dropout regulator and charge pump are available in SOT-23 packages, the overall footprint of the circuit in Figure 1 is comparable to that of a regulated-charge-pump circuit.

voltage regulator module - a Whatis.com definition - see also: VRM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A voltage regulator module (VRM) is an installable module that senses a computer's microprocessor voltage requirements and ensures that the correct voltage is maintained.
If you are changing your computer's microprocessor (for example, changing from a Pentium to a Pentium Pro or a Pentium with MMX), you need to add a voltage regulator module to the existing voltage regulator in the motherboard so that the new voltage requirements can be detected and accommodated.
Adding a VRM allows it to regulate the voltage for I/O while the original regulator built into the motherboard continues to regulate core voltage.

Zener diodes are frequently used as voltage regulating devices, because they act to clamp the voltage drop across themselves at a predetermined level.
Whatever excess voltage is supplied by the power source becomes dropped across the series resistor.
It is helpful to think of a zener diode as a voltage limiter: establishing a maximum voltage drop, but not a minimum voltage drop.
