 The MSDS HyperGlossary: Concentration Units
To avoid confusion whether a solution is percent by weight or percent by volume, the symbol "w/w" (for weight to weight) is often used after the concentration such as "10% potassium iodide solution in water (w/w)".
Also called volume percent or percent by volume, this is typically only used for mixtures of liquids.
Percent by volume is simply the volume of the solute divided by the sum of the volumes of the other components multiplied by 100%:

Volume percent is one of the most common formats used to express the concentrations of major gas stream constituents such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor.
Concentration data expressed as volume percent have the same value at both actual and standard conditions, because any adjustments necessary to account for changes in temperature and pressure affect the numerator and denominator proportionally.
It is the ratio of the volume percent of one component divided by the total (100%) volume percent.

Weight/Volume Percent   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Because of the different units in the numerator and denominator, this type of concentration is not a true percentage.
It is used as a quick and easy concentration unit because volumes are easier to measure than weights and because the density of dilute solutions is generally close to 1 g/mL.
Thus, the volume of a solution in mL is very nearly numerically equal to the mass of the solution in grams.

A suspension according to claim 17, wherein the concentration of the particles is at least 60 volume percent.
A higher volume percent of solids would result in less shrinkage upon drying and sintering, superior green strength, and a reduction in the probability of a large defect or void in particle packing.
We have found that pourable suspensions of colloidal particles can be made with such a high volume fraction of solids that when only a small quantity of liquid is removed from the suspension, as for example by evaporation, the suspension sets very rapidly into a solid with a concomitantly small amount of shrinkage.

Mass percent concentration is defined as the mass of the solute in grams multiplied by 100 divided by the mass of the solution in grams.
There are other percent concentrations involving expressing the solute in mass terms and the solution in volume terms.
Another Percent concentration term that is used frequently in the medical fields is Volume Percentage.
