Topic: Voluntary caregiver

Voluntary caregiver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Voluntary caregiver is the modern terminology for an unpaid spouse, relative, friend or neighbor of a disabled person or child who assists with activities of daily living and assists those unable to fully take care of themselves.
The services of one or more voluntary caregivers can be valuable in helping the disabled person live in their own home and/or with their own family, limiting the need and costs of professional home care services, or relocation to group home, assisted living, nursing home, or hospice care settings.
Caregiver training is sometimes offered by professional agencies to share options and methods for voluntary caregivers to use.

When Child Welfare Agencies Rely on Voluntary Kinship Placements
The socioeconomic risks faced by children in voluntary and private kinship care are significantly higher than children overall and are comparable to the risks faced by children in kinship foster care (Ehrle, Geen, and Clark 2001).
Voluntary placements occur when there is not enough evidence for legal removal of the child or where the abuse is difficult to prove but the agency still has concerns about the situation.
It is clear from discussions with workers in Alabama that their use of voluntary placements extends to all children regardless of age or type of abuse or neglect.

What to expect from the child welfare system
Also, kin caregivers are usually given some flexibility in the amount of time needed to meet the State's requirements, because the placement of the children is often unexpected.
Caregivers may find that some of this structure is helpful in dealing with the children's parents, schools, or medical care arrangements; on the other hand, caregivers have less freedom to make decisions on their own about the children.
Caregivers should ask whether they are required to be licensed in order to care for the children, and whether licensing will allow them to receive foster care payments.

The New Atlantis - A Journal of Technology and Society
At the same time, fewer and fewer people are available to serve as voluntary caregivers: today’s baby boomers had fewer children than their parents; these grown children are more geographically dispersed; and family bonds are increasingly complicated by the high percentage of divorce.
When caregiving is combined with technical expertise—as in the case of nurses and some social workers—salaries rise to a solidly middle-class level.
Caregiving need not be paid, it was thought, because its value is intrinsic, and women were able to work without personal wages and public recognition because they knew that everyone understood the singular and indispensable importance of what they did.

The caregiver should be encouraged to give the child mementos that signify the importance of their relationship while giving the child the clear message that they are permitting the child to go.
The caregiver should also be given the opportunity to explore the loss of the family they may have envisioned, which could be quite different from the one being formed with a foster child who has their own biological history.
Whenever possible, it may be helpful for the caregiver to participate in the celebration of the child's move, emphasizing the importance of the caregiver's relationship to the child in an event that symbolizes the union of the child's past with their future.

Caregivers do not need to have legal custody in order to apply for TANF benefits, but they do need to meet their State's TANF definition of a kin caregiver.
Even if a relative caregiver or the caregiver's family does not qualify for TANF benefits, it is possible to apply for and receive benefits for the relative children being cared for in the home.
Relative caregivers who are licensed foster parents taking care of children placed with them by their local child welfare agency or court may be eligible for such payments.
