Volvo Adventures, New Zealand - P1800 in New Zealand
Having failed with the P1900 Volvo executives were no doubt keen to get it right the next time and their second attempt at creating a sports car was to become a truly European affair.
Volvo abandoned the P1800 in the early 1970s but returned to the sports coupe in 1996 when it came out with the C70 in 1996.
He writes: "The Volvo is reminiscent of the sort of robust and sensible car the Americans like to think they used to make, the ultimate reincarnation of the Ford Model A, and thus becomes equally acceptable to the New England academic, the mid-western farmer or the style conscious Californian computer buff".

Promotex Online - The Saintly Volvo
Volvo's own production capacity was already stretched to the limit and Petterson's plan was to farm out the tooling and assembly of the new car to Karmann.
Fearing the new Volvo could hurt sales of their own cars, VW told Karmann they would cancel all their contracts if the P1800 was built in Osnabrück.
The P1800 is still considered one of the most beautiful Volvos ever made and the public and press attending the Brussels show loved it.

The P1800 used many components from the 120-series Volvo sedan, known here as the 122-S, such as the running gear, 1780 cc overhead valve four-cylinder engine, and most suspension parts.
Suspension was by A-arms with coil springs at the front and a solid axle with coils at the rear.

Even at this early stage in truck development, Volvo trucks were built to a very high standard in terms of their reliability and quality, especially compared to non-Swedish trucks, which had not been designed with the poor Swedish climate and poor Swedish roads in mind.
By 1964 Volvo had opened a new production plant in Torslanda, Sweden capable of producing up to 200,000 cars a year and by 1966 the Volvo 140 family was introduced firstly as a saloon and later as an estate, helping to cement a family market that Volvo was rapidly claiming as its own.
The Volvo 240 range replaced the 140 with even higher levels of safety and quality and was joined by the smaller Volvo 340 models from Holland to take Volvo’s sales past the 4 million mark by the end of the 1970’s.

 The Saint's Volvo 1800
Indeed, an earlier P1800 model had already appeared as part of Corgi's standard range of model cars, one of which was featured in the 15th episode of the TV series, and it was possibly this that caused Corgi to embark on the idea of a Saint version of the model car.
All parties were oblivious to the fact the Volvo was about to receive more publicity for its 1800 Series than it could ever have achieved by any other means and the TV company reputedly paid the full list price for the first 1800 car.
During 1963, assembly of Volvo Pl800s was transferred from the UK to Sweden and a few minor changes to the detail of the car occurred with this move, while an 'S' suffix was added to the model designation.

Volvo Cars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo until 1999, when it was acquired by the Ford Motor Company and placed in its Premier Automotive Group.
The Volvo design team invented both the 'safety cage' and 'crumple zone' concept, where passengers are protected in a strong, encircling frame and the energy of a crash is absorbed by destruction of the bonnet or boot of the car.
In the early 1970s, Volvo acquired the passenger car division of the Dutch company DAF, and marketed their small cars as Volvos before releasing the Dutch-built Volvo 340, which went on to be one of the biggest-selling cars in the UK market in the 1980s.
