Volvocaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The family was named by Ehrenberg in 1834, and is known in older classifications as the Volvocidae.
Originally it included all the colonial forms here grouped as the Volvocales, but since has been restricted to the spherical colonies, which form as a flat plate of cells and undergo a process of gastrulation before being released.
These organisms have been studied by geneticists who hope that they may shed light on gastrulation in the development of other organisms, including humans.

This wiki is part of the Volvocales Information Project - designed as a common effort among all scientists with interest in Volvocales who wish to share information, images, publications.
We count on the involvement of the Volvocales community to make this wiki a powerful and comprehensive database to be used by both researchers (current and newcomers) and teachers as well as the general public.

Hydrodynamics of Volvocales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Volvocales can be modeled as moving spheres in the low Reynolds number regime (Re = RVr /h < 1; R=colony radius, V=speed, h =viscosity of water, r =density of water).
We predict for the Volvocales that the role of flagella beating, yielding chaotic mixing and nutrient uptake, will increase as colony size increases, and concomitantly, so will the interaction between the fitness components.
We are studying the factors: force, mixing and long range advection, by measuring flagellar size, beating rate, associated transport of passive tracers, and flow rate, with a high speed camera and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) setup shown here in Ray Goldstein's lab.

We use the Volvocales as a model system to study the evolution of multicellularity and the evolution of sex.
We are using hydrodynamics to understand the viability component of fitness, which depends a lot on flagellar activity, during the evolutionary transition to multicellularity in this lineage.
We are also interested in the role of oxidative stress and DNA damage in the evolution of sex in the Volvocales.

 Introduction to the Chlorophyceae
Volvocales, Chaetophorales, & Chlorococcales - together make up more than half of all chlorophyceans.
From left to right, these are Chlamydomonas (Volvocales); Pediastrum (Chlorellales); and Oedogonium (Oedogoniales).
The pictures also serve to show some of the structural diversity of chlorophyceans; these are (again, from left to right): unicells, colonies, and filaments.

Sexual reproduction is diverse within the colonial Volvocales.
The four-celled alga Tetrabaena is similar to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in that only one of the two conjugating isogametes bears a tubular mating structure and four separate gone cells are released from the germinating zygote.
In most of other isogamous colonial Volvocales, however, both of the two conjugating gametes have a tubular mating structure and germinating zygotes give rise to a single gone cell (Pandorina etc.) or a four-celled germ colony (Gonium).

Hallmann, A. Plant J. Green algae of the order Volvocales provide an unrivalled opportunity for exploring the transition from unicellularity to multicellularity.
Our results suggest that pherophorins are used as the building blocks for the extracellular scaffold throughout the Volvocales, with the characteristic mesh sizes in different ECM structures being a result of the highly diverse extensions of the HR domains.
Pherophorins have therefore been a versatile element during the evolution of ECM architecture in these green algae.

is a member of the Order Volvocales, Family Spondy-lomoraceae.
It is a colonial member, and is distinct from other members of the Volvocales by the lack of a plakeal sequence in the divisions leading to the formation of the daughter colony (SMITH [2]).
Pyrobotrys has mulberry-shaped colonies, and the cells are alternately arranged in tiers of four cells each.

What molecular changes were necessary to bring about the transition in phylogenetic development from unicellularity to multicellularity?
The green algae of the order Volvocales offer the unrivalled opportunity to study the origin of multicellularity within a closely related group of living species.
The complexity within this order progresses gradually from the unicellular Chlamydomonas, via Gonium, Pandorina and Eudorina, which form colonies with an increasing co-operation of individual cells, to Volvox, the simplest living multicellular organism.
