Topic: Volynia

History of Ukraine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Conflict among the various principalities of Rus', in spite of the efforts of Grand Prince Vladimir Monomakh, led to decline, beginning in the 12th century.
More particularly, the lands of Volynia in the north and north-west passed to the rule of Lithuanian princes, while the south-west passed to the control of Poland (Galicia) and Hungary (Zakarpattya).
Lithuania took control of the state of Volynia in northern and north-western Ukraine, including the region around Kyiv (Rus'), and the rulers of Lithuania then adopted the title of ruler of Rus'.

As the successor state to Kievan-Rus', Galicia comprised an autonomous principality from 1087 to 1253 (united to Volynia in the state of Halych-Volynia from around 1200), which became a vassal kingdom of the Mongol Golden Horde from 1253 to 1340.
During this time, the princes of Galicia moved the capital from Halych to L'viv.
The sister state of Volynia, together with Kyiv, then fell under Lithuanian control and the mantle of Rus' was transferred from Halych-Volynia to Lithuania.

Our Orthodox Volynia has reason to fervently respond to the general grieving over the repose of Metropolitan Anthony and join it whole-heartedly, since the late metropolitan nourished it for many years as the Archbishop of Volynia.
He was for a long time called “Anthony of Volynia.” But it is not in word but in deed that his service to Volynia earned fame for the eminent archpastor, and which departed with him into eternity.
We are certain that not a parish in Volynia will be found that would not fervently pray for the late metropolitan, when they learn that he is no longer on this earth.
