In this post, von Manstein brought about one of the greatest victories in modern warfare when, despite the numerical and material superiority of the Soviets, he was able to halt the Red Army’s offensive fresh from the victory at Stalingrad and went on to capture the city of Kharkov with his own successful counteroffensive.
Manstein was born Fritz Erich von Lewinski in Berlin, the tenth child of a Prussian aristocrat, artillery general Eduard von Lewinski (1829 - 1906), and Helene von Sperling (1847 - 1910).
On 4 February 1938 von Manstein was appointed commander of the 18th infantry division with the rank of Generalleutnant in Liegnitz, Silesia.

 Gerd von Rundstedt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After the war, von Rundstedt rose steadily in the small 100,000 man army and in 1932, was appointed commander of the 3rd Infantry Division.
When the invasion was called off, von Rundstedt took control of occupation forces and was given responsibility to develop the coastal defences in the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
In November, von Rundstedt had a heart attack, but he refused to be hospitalized and continued the advance, reaching Rostov on November 21.

In 1915, von Manstein was promoted to the rank of Captain and remained as staff officer until the end of the war in 1918.
Von Manstein started his attack on December 12th and by 24th was within 50km from "Fortress Stalingrad", when his advance was halted and he was forced into 200km long retreat, which continued until February of 1943.

Erich von Manstein was born in Berlin on 24th November 1887 as a member of the Lewinski family member, but was adopted by the childless von Mansteins who were related to the Lewinski family.
With the dismissal of Baron von Fritsch in 1938 he was transferred to Liegnitz as commander of the 18th Division, and later that year he took part in the occupation of the Sudetenland.
Von Manstein was awarded the Oak Leaves to his Knight's Cross for the victory and the recapture of Kharkov.

Manstein's tragedy is that he is trying wage war to secure the best possible outcome for Germany but must bow to a maddened tyrant who harbors a death wish for Germany.

Allow me to quote one passage that has remained with me ever since I read this book 10 years ago: "This was the hour that usually comes sooner or later in such a contest, when the outcome of the battle is on the razor's edge.
Obviously, Manstein was fighting on the wrong side so it is hard to muster great sympathy for his efforts.
