VHF omnidirectional range - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VORs broadcast a VHF radio signal encoding both the identity of the station and the angle to it, telling the pilot in what direction he lies from the VOR station, referred to as the radial.
Each VOR operates on a radio frequency assigned to it between 108.0 megahertz (MHz) and 117.95 MHz, which is in the VHF (very high frequency) range.
The VOR is indicating that the aircraft is on the 254 degree radial, west-southwest "from" the VOR station.

 EP Spotlight on VOR
Voice of the Retarded (VOR) was founded in 1983 when a small group of concerned parents joined together to successfully defeat legislation introduced in Congress that sought to close all private and public institutions for people with mental retardation.
VOR's Mission: To unite people in advocacy, to educate, and to assist families, organizations, public officials, and individuals concerned with the quality of life and choice for people with mental retardation within residential options, including home, community residences, institutional, and congregate (or group) settings.
VOR aids in ensuring that all feedback and opinions regarding the care received by the individual are sought, respected and given due consideration.

 VOR (Very High Frequency Omnirange)
The VOR transmits in the very high frequency range of 108.1 through 117.95 MegaHertz (MHz); therefore, it is relatively free from precipitation static and annoying interference caused by storms or other weather phenomena.
VOR RECEIVER: In many modern aircraft one control unit is used for both the VOR receiver and the VHF communications transceiver.
The VOR signals are received on the antenna, normally located on the vertical stabilizer or on top of the fuselage.

The VOR indicator is smart enough to know when a usable signal has not been received and displays an "OFF" flag, a red and white barber-pole striped flag in the gauge in the illustration to the left.
To calibrate a VOR, the pilot tunes in the VOT frequency while on the ground (in rare instances this check is performed in the air).

Their expectations and training apparently shaped the way in which the new VOR technology was presented to the pilot population.
Exactly half the time thus flying the VOR as a command instrument--that is, turning left or right toward the CDI without regard to the SHI--sends the aircraft off in the wrong direction.
During VOR instruction for the private, every student is told how to intercept a given radial and fly to a station: tune the OBS to the reciprocal of the desired radial, confirm a TO indication, then fly the heading at the top of the OBS.

By knowing the time difference between the first and second flashes for every bearing (from 0 to 360) from the VOR, the VOR receiver is able to calculate the bearing of the aircraft from the station, putting it on a 'degree' or 'radial' from that station.
VORs have a range of some 200nm or so (depending on the altitude of the aircraft), and (like most VHF radio signals) are restricted to line of sight propagation.
DMEs are usually assigned a 'ghost' VHF frequency (often the frequency of the VOR it is paired with), and the aircraft's DME equipment automatically tunes the UHF DME frequency associated with that VHF frequency.

VOR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
VOR stands for VHF Omni-directional Range, which is a type of ground-based electronic aid to navigation for aircraft.
A VOR receiver in the aircraft provides the pilot with a means to determine the bearing in degrees from the VOR to the current position of the aircraft, or the bearing from the aircraft to the VOR.
The bearing is referenced to magnetic north, which differs from true north by a number called the magnetic variation, which varies depending on one's location around the world and is available on aeronautical charts and in directories.

 VOR Navigation
If one is traveling away from an airport near a VOR station, one can observe the required radial to lead to the destination and head the craft in the direction of the reported "from" radial of the relevant VOR.
Then the "from" radials for the VOR pairs for various points along the flight are recorded to be referred to during the flight to aid the navigator in keeping the craft on course.
The VOR angle to the aircraft position is measured from the north magnetic pole, rather than the usual convention of defining angles from the positive x geographic axis.

At a few stations, usually in mountainous terrain, the pilot may occasionally observe a brief course needle oscillation, similar to the indication of "approaching station." Pilots flying over unfamiliar routes are cautioned to be on the alert for these vagaries, and in particular, to use the "to/from" indicator to determine positive station passage.
The VOR or localizer portion of the facility is identified by a coded tone modulated at 1020 Hz or a combination of code and voice.
When either the VOR or the DME is inoperative, it is important to recognize which identifier is retained for the operative facility.

First, it helps to understand what exactly a VOR is. It's a ground based navaid, transmitting VHF (very high frequency) signals in all directions (See Figure 1).
VORs transmit on frequencies between 108.0 and 118.0 MHz.
Navigating directly to a VOR is the easiest way to use this kind of navaid.
