The Voree Plates were excavated in 1845 near Burlington, Wisconsin by four men who were acting under the direction of the prophet James Strang.
A statement in the Chronicles of Voree, which was a handwritten church journal, says that the translation made by James Strang was a translation "in part" of the plates.
It also seems that a double dot or a triple dot is used on the Voree Plates to indicate the end of a sentence, and a quadruple dot is used to end a paragraph.

Moses Smith was probably already on his way back to Voree when this important consultation took place and it seems doubtful that he had any direct influence in the conversion of William Smith to the Strangite cause.

Society activities during 1929 included exploration of some of the Indian trails in the Burlington area, a visit to the Panther Effigy mound through which Highway 83 passes on the way to New Munster, and visits to some of the old cemeteries in the Burlington area to record tombstone information.
In May 1930 the Society held an outdoor picnic meeting on the grounds of the Meinhardt residence on Kane Street with the historic log cabin as a background.
The Voree site was surveyed and the map was prepared by Edwin S. Ela, while the casting was done by Nancy Coonsman Hahn, a nationally known sculptress and wife of Mannel Hahn, who was the first president of the Burlington Liars Club.

This revelation sealed Strang's status as a "Prophet and a Seer of God" in the eyes of his followers, and their zealous dedication to their leader increased immeasurably.
When the influx of gentile (non-Mormon) settlers into the Voree area threatened to disrupt their lifestyle, Strang set-out to identify a safe refuge for his flock.
It would appear that Bedford was not the only member of the community to have misgivings concerning Strang's leadership, as Bedford and a group of 40 other men ambushed Strang on June 16, 1856, mortally wounding the King.

The record begins with a transcription of the "appointment letter" of June 18, 1844, from Joseph Smith to Strang to "plant a Stake of Zion" in Wisconsin, and continues with details of church organization in Voree.

Strang, who already published a newspaper, ordered construction of a vast marble "Temple of Zion" and other grand structures, but even as his community was growing he sensed the resentment of non-Mormons nearby and decided to move.
Wounded, apparently dying, Strang asked to be returned to Voree, and so two of his wives -- Betsy and Phoebe -- took him down Lake Michigan, then by wagon to Burlington.
Strang died in Voree on July 9, in a house across the road from where the marker still stands, and most of what had been his "garden of peace" eventually disappeared.
