Duke Leto Atreides is now the skilful and much-loved ruler of Caladan, where two of his most loyal warriors have come to manhood.
Leto's heart is at war with his duty, for he must marry for politics and power, not love - despite the charms of Princess Kailea of the fallen House of Ix and Jessica, the exquisite, perfectly trained concubine chosen by the Bene Gesserit to be the mother of Leto's daughter.
Drawing on notes, outlines and correspondence Frank Herbert left behind at his death, as well as conversations and brain-storming sessions Brian Herbert held with his father, House Atreides is a breathtaking story of war, treachery and of love, loyalty and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming odds.

In a speech given immediately after the Battle of Corrin, the final battle of the Jihad, Faykan took much of the credit for the battle (which in fact was mainly organized and carried out by Supreme Bashar Vorian Atreides) and announced that he would change his name to Corrino, to reflect this bit of history.

One of the Great Houses of the Imperium, House Harkonnen is driven by a kanly (vendetta) against House Atreides.
The first Abulurd Harkonnen had refused an order from his superior Vorian Atreides to kill a multitude of humans enslaved by the thinking machines.
Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is later killed by Alia Atreides, and his heir Feyd-Rautha is killed shortly thereafter by Paul Atreides, effectively crippling the House; during the reign of the God Emperor, the House dwindled and died, after a disastrous venture which sunk all their remaining fortunes into a no-globe.

 Bene Gesserit - Dune Wiki
In the novel Dune, the Bene Gesserit breeding scheme was, in theory, to have come to full fruition from the union of an Atreides daughter (born of the Lady Jessica and the Duke Leto Atreides) and the Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (son of Abulurd Harkonnen, brother of the Siridar-Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
Interestingly, the personality that eventually took control of Alia was that of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, a memory that was able to surface due to her place in the Bene Gesserit breeding scheme.
(An Atreides daughter (born of the Lady Jessica and the Duke Leto Atreides) was to have bred with the Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (Son of Abulurd Harkonnen, brother of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen) with a high probability for producing from this union the Bene Gesserit totality: the Kwisatz Haderach.

This devotion is easily explained: it masterfully weaves a framework for the universe Dune fans enjoy so much, a structure that is arguably superior to that provided by the recent prequels.
A prominent example of this disparity is the explanation of the how the feud between House Harkonnen and House Atreides began.
The prequels suggest that Vorian Atreides shamed House Harkonnen because Abulurd Harkonnen refused an order to kill humans that had been enslaved by thinking machines.

On one level, Vorian was absolutely correct that they had to press the attack against Omnius, regardless of the potential cost in life, in order to eliminate the threat of Omnius once and for all (or at least as far as we know at the moment).
Yes, it was a betrayal, but given Vorian's previous sadness in reaction to the massive nuclear destruction in the Great Purge, the goal of preventing another, though lesser, slaughter, is still a noble goal.
