 Erich von Manstein
That part of Vatutin's command which had crossed the Donetz at Voroshilovgrad was now attempting to push between Mackensen's 1st Panzer Army and Army Detachment Hollidt as the latter withdrew toward the Mius.
This created a situation where the forces south of Voroshilovgrad would not be sufficient to block the Russian thrust to the southwest.
A Russian cavalry corps had pressed on as far as the railway junction at Debaltsevo which was located far to the rear of 1st Panzer Army and behind the position which Army Detachment Hollidt was to occupy on the Mius.

In accordance with the Soviet command's offensive concept, the employment of the cavalry as a deep raiding force was to have facilitated and accelorated the advance of the Southwestern Front's main forces into the Donbas region.
Having discovered a weak link in the enemy's defenses southeast of Voroshilovgrad [Lugansk], on the night of 8 February, the cavalry penetrated the front lines, entered the operational depths, and began a deep raid against the enemy rear area in the region of the large rail center at Debaltsevo.

The game is nearly even right now:  I have 25 objectives to Jeremy’s 26 and my loss penalty is 0 to Jeremy’s 4.  My overall victory level is +3 and at this point the game is a draw.  Since everything seems to be going my way I’ll continue with the original plan.
The battle for Voroshilovgrad continues to rage.  I’ve nearly reached my 2 cutoff points, Krasnodar and Kommunarsk, and if I can hold these positions may be able to start a serious attack on Voroshilovgrad in a couple of turns.
Of more importance now is the Stalingrad front as the clock is ticking and points are being given to the Germans for each turn the pocket survives.  I’ve so many one-rounders lately that this turn I decided to just cut loose and attack on ignore losses.  I paid for that stunt.
